Description

Position: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
Location:Indianapolis IN
Reports To:Executive Director
Department: Ophthalmology Operating Room (OR)

Job Summary:

The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is a critical member of the surgical team who assists in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons registered nurses or other surgical personnel. The CST ensures a sterile environment and the safety of patients by adhering to established surgical protocols and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preoperative Duties:

    • Prepare and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment.
    • Set up the sterile field with all necessary instruments and supplies.
    • Verify patient identity and surgical site according to hospital policy.
    • Assist in preparing patients for surgery by positioning them on the operating table and covering them with sterile drapes.
    • Perform surgical hand scrub and don sterile gown and gloves.
  • Intraoperative Duties:

    • Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistant as needed.
    • Maintain the sterile field and ensure that all members of the surgical team adhere to aseptic techniques.
    • Monitor and count sponges needles and instruments to ensure they are not left inside the patient.
    • Assist in the handling of specimens for laboratory analysis.
    • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide appropriate instruments and supplies.
  • Postoperative Duties:

    • Assist in applying dressings to surgical wounds.
    • Help transfer patients to the recovery area.
    • Clean and restock the operating room after each procedure.
    • Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures and supplies used.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program.
  • Certification:
    • Current certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
  • Experience:
    • Preferred: 12 years of experience in a surgical setting particularly in the operating room.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Proficiency in surgical instrument handling and sterile techniques.
    • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
    • Ability to work well under pressure in a fastpaced environment.
    • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
    • Physical stamina to stand for long periods and handle surgical equipment.

Licenses:

  • Valid BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent exposure to blood bodily fluids and other potentially infectious materials.
  • Required to stand for extended periods.
  • May involve lifting and positioning patients and heavy equipment.
