SUMMARY: The role of the secondary science teacher is to develop in each student an awareness of the role of science in economic and social progress; to motivate each student to acquire knowledge of scientific facts and principles and skills in scientific methods of problem solving; to discover develop and advance students in the scientific fields.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach skills knowledge and scientific methods through courses in science to secondary students utilizing course guidelines aligned with Arkansas teaching/ learning standards and other appropriate curriculum pacing guides in teaching individual course content.
- Plan a science program involving demonstrations lectures discussions and student experiments; organizes laboratory activities for optimum learning.
- Demonstrate scientific concepts by use of scientific equipment experiments or teacherprepared charts sketches and other instructional aids.
- Provide individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects and experiments are being worked on simultaneously.
- Instruct students in proper use care and safe handling of chemicals scienceequipment and plant and animal life.
- Provide for safe storage and proper use of materials equipment and tools. Make minor adjustments and requests repairs to equipment as required.
- Design learning activities that will relate the varied sciences to the physical world.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly productive classroom environment.
- Evaluate each students growth in scientific knowledge and skills.
- Select and requisition books and instructional aids and instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records.
- Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.
- Supervise students in and outofclassroom during the assigned work day.
- Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Maintain professional competence through professional learning activities provided by the District and/or in selfselected professional growth activities.
- Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator in the evaluation process.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/LICENSURE/EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree required; field of study correlated to teaching assignment as a secondary science teacher with the appropriate licensure code or equivalent. Teachers with experience are valued; however no prior experience is required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of preemployment background checks. Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times around students other staff members and the general public.
