Job Description

Job Title: Media Specialist Exemption Status/Test: Exempt/Professional

Reports to: Principal Date Revised: 08/28/2015

Dept./School: Assigned Campus(es)


Primary Purpose:

Direct the operation of the school library/media center. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating evaluating synthesizing and using information to solve problems. Serve as teacher materials expert and curriculum adviser to ensure that library/media center is involved in instructional programs of the school.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelors degree

Valid Texas teaching certificate

Valid Texas librarian or learning resources specialist certificate or endorsement preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Effective oral and written communication skills

Organize catalogue display distribute traditional and digital resources

Ability to select and provide access to a wide variety of materials and technology which meet the needs of various learning situations

Ability to teach information and technology literacy needed for independent learning

Ability to be flexible in order to accommodate teachers and students

Experience:

Two years of teaching experience effectively integrating technology in the classroom in a public school setting

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instruction

  1. Join with teachers to identify links across curricular content learning outcomes and student information needs using a variety of print nonprint and electronic information resources.
  2. Promote and use existing as well as emerging technologies to support teaching and learning connecting the school with the global learning community.
  3. Collaborate with and coach teachers to provide traditional/digital resources to teach information and technology literacy skills.
  4. Master electronic resources and maintain a focus on the nature quality and ethical use of information available in these tools.
  5. Remain knowledgeable about current trends in education.
  6. Model the effective and enthusiastic use of books multimedia and other creative expressions of information as sources of information.

Media/Library Programs

  1. Establish yearly and longterm goals for the media center programs aligned with the districts mission goals and objectives.
  2. Make recommendations for acquisitions and manage the processing organizing distribution maintenance and inventory of library/media resources.
  3. Maintain a working knowledge of software and digital resources.
  4. Provide guidance in software and hardware utilization including processes for evaluation of both.
  5. Collaborate with teachers to use instructional technology to engage students and to foster critical thinking necessary to develop lifelong learners.
  6. Organize the collection of resources for maximum and effective use.
  7. Create and maintain a media center that is inviting safe flexible and conducive to student learning.

Student Management

  1. Carry out student discipline in accordance with board policies and administrative regulations.
  2. Provide student assistance for technology and other resources available in the media center while promoting positive attitudes toward the media center.

Administration

  1. Guide and assist staff in the use of new media and technologies
  2. Helps staff and students become comfortable with technology by being available to assist them.
  3. Comply with federal and state laws State Board of Education rule and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.

Communication

  1. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
  2. Communicate effectively with colleagues students and parents.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Direct the work of clerical aide(s) student aides and volunteers.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard library equipment including imaging equipment; standard instruction equipment

Posture: Regular sitting standing kneeling squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; regular overhead reaching; climbing ladders

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); occasional moderate lifting and carrying 1544 pounds)

Environment: Work inside; work alone; exposure to biological and chemical hazards such as mold and dust

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruption; maintain emotional control under stress.
