Job Description

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Office of the District Attorney seeks Deputy District Attorneys at the III level to fill vacancies in the Colorado River Office (located in Blythe California). Incumbents will perform a wide range of professional legal work in criminal and related civil cases; prepare and present cases before any court within the state; perform other related duties as required.

The Deputy District Attorney III Blythe is the journey level classification in the Deputy District Attorney series reporting to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position and is solely designated to be used in the desert region of Blythe. As such incumbents within this classification will be assigned and expected to work in the Office of the District Attorney located in Blythe.

The Deputy District Attorney III Blythe is distinguished from the Deputy District Attorney II by the formers assignments which require demonstrated ability to effectively perform the complete range of legal work in the field of prosecution. The Deputy District Attorney III Blythe is further distinguished from the Deputy District Attorney IV in that the latter prosecutes the more difficult and complex cases involving multiple defendants multiple charges and serious consequences of error and/or function as lead supervisors over journey level attorneys.

The offices staff of over 700 is comprised of prosecuting attorneys sworn investigators victimwitness advocates paralegals investigative technicians forensic analysts and a wide range of information technology and supporting staff all committed to excellence and integrity in public service. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Investigate research and prepare all types of cases for prosecution; present and prosecute cases before all courts within the state.

Interview and advise law enforcement officers and the public in regard to the issuance of criminal complaints; act as a senior deputy for cases in branch Municipal Courts; negotiate with the defense regarding the disposition or modification of charges in cases.

Perform legal research in specialized areas of prosecution; study interpret and apply statutes ordinances court decisions and legal opinions.

May assist in the training and supervision of other deputies.

May act for higher level deputies in their absence; dictate correspondence and prepare reports.

May coordinate the work of support personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

OPTION I
Experience: One year as a Deputy District Attorney II in Riverside County or in an equivalent class with another government agency.

OPTION II
Experience:Two years in the practice of criminal law.

OPTION III
Experience:Three years in the practice of law.

ALL OPTIONS
Knowledge of: Legal principles and their application; the rules of evidence and the conduct of court proceedings; the duties powers limitations and authority of the District Attorneys Office; the methods procedures and practices of prosecution; grand jury functions and procedures; the roles and operations of related agencies in the criminal justice system.

Ability to: Analyze legal problems and apply legal principles and practices; present facts arguments and laws clearly and logically in written and oral form; perform legal research; work cooperatively with others.

Other Requirements

License/Certificate: Active membership in the State Bar of California.

Possession of a valid California Drivers License is required.

Must be able to pass an extensive background check.

PreEmployment

As an Approved Local Merit System all County of Riverside employees except those serving At Will are subject to the probationary period provisions as specified in the applicable Memorandum of Understanding County Resolution or Salary Ordinance. Temporary and Per Diem employees serve at the pleasure of the agency/department head.
