Positions available with Public Works Operations and Wastewater

Positions are expected to last from lateApril midSeptember. The timeframe is fairly flexible and is dependent upon operational needs weather and availability of those hired. Our seasonal workers provide support to our entire team so they can expect to typically work a 40hour week with a combination of weekday weekend and holiday schedules. Our management team works with each member to set a reliable and regular schedule that can accommodate other commitments.

This position helps support the daytoday operations of the Public Works Operations Department by assisting with maintaining city streets drainage and sewer facilities; water systems; parks; cleaning and sanitizing public restrooms within city parks and other duties that are equally important to the residents and guests of our beautiful city. This position is a temporary seasonal work assignment and training will be provided to successful candidates.

Assignment may vary and work is performed under immediate supervision while the employees learn tasks and properly carry out assignments as directed. Work is evaluated on safe work habits ability to work without constant supervision willingness to perform assigned tasks punctuality and dependability selfmotivation ability to get along with coworkers supervisors and other city employees as well as their individual contribution to the goals of the city. This position may be required to work on the weekends.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The work involves physical manual labor public restroom cleaning trash removal eating blowing edging and preventative maintenance tasks for the public works department. Employees will operate a city vehicle and miscellaneous light equipment and practice good safety habits.

Duties:

  • Cleans roadside ditches culverts and catch basins.
  • Assists in the maintenance of streets sidewalks and storm systems.
  • Cuts brush weeds and bushes and performs planting and transplanting weeding mowing raking shoveling pruning and maintaining trees shrubs and flower beds as directed.
  • Once trained may operate hand tools compressors pneumatic tools paint equipment power tools pressure washers and other tools needed to complete tasks.
  • Once trained may operate a wide variety of light equipment such as a light duty truck mower backpack blower eater sod cutter edger chainsaw and flatbed truck.
  • Maintains punctual and reliable attendance.
  • Operations
    • Performs parks and grounds maintenance functions including cleaning restrooms applying beauty bark weeding landscaped areas washing vehicles preparing for painting and maintaining buildings.
    • Assists in providing support for special events.
  • Wastewater
    • Performs grounds maintenance located at the wastewater treatment plant and lift stations including vegetation pruning applying beauty bark weeding landscaped areas mowing lawns washing vehicles pressure washing painting and maintaining buildings.
    • Building maintenance such as cleaning windows dusting equipment vacuuming etc.

KEY COMPETENCIES
Knowledge of:
  • Basic safety precautions.
  • First Aid/CPR.
Ability to:
  • Learn and implement procedural and technical instructions.
  • Maintain cooperative effective and productive working relationships.
  • Wear protective clothing and equipment such as rain and snow gear hard hat hearing protection respirators boots goggles and gloves.

Physical Demands
The physical attributes described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to stand for long periods of time; walk including over rough and uneven surfaces; engage in considerable activity including balancing bending kneeling stooping squatting crouching crawling and reaching; and lift and/or move moderately heavy items. An aboveaverage level of physical agility and dexterity is required. Some field positions may require lifting/carrying/moving objects or materials up to 90 lbs and occasional lifting of moderately heavy items.

Work Environment
This job is primarily performed in the city public works shop or in the field depending on the
assignment. The incumbent may work at public facilities and/or on roadways and be exposed to traffic hazards. Among the hazards encountered are dampness direct sunlight communicable disease dust loud noises pollen pesticides insecticides insect stings noxious odors vibration moving mechanical parts fumes or chemicals and smoke.

Schedule: Typical hours of work are MondayFriday from 7am3:30pm with a 30minute meal break the employee will be scheduled to work occasionally on evenings early mornings weekends and federal holidays. This position is considered essential and will require an onsite presence.

Driving and Travel: Driving would typically be up to 30 hours a workweek within the city limits. Work requires traveling to a variety of locations to perform site work or to attend meetings. Travel is required to visit other work sites in the area and to attend meetings trainings and/or conferences as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education training and experience that indicates the individual can successfully perform the job may be considered.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Steeltoed boots are required while working and need to be supplied by the employee.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES
The following certifications and licenses are required for the position (or must be obtained within the timeframe stated) and must be maintained for the duration of employment.

  • A valid Washington State drivers license (or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire) and two years of driving experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Successful candidates must submit a certified copy of their current driving record/abstract prior to hire and maintain a satisfactory driving record free from serious or frequent violations.
  • Ability to pass position relevant preemployment screening.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

At the City of Gig Harbor our aim is to extend salary offers that fall within the range from the minimum to the midpoint. These offers will be determined by assessing the applicants relevant experience in alignment with the requirements of the applied position at the city alongside a comprehensive evaluation of pay rates for our existing employees engaged in comparable roles. Its important to note that our salary ranges are currently under review and may be subject to adjustment.
