Job Description

AVID Teacher/Coordinator

SUMMARY:

  • Teaching
    • The AVID teacher is responsible for the AVID program which is an inschool college preparatory program designed to assist students in rigorous courses including the AVID elective class to be college ready after high school. It targets students in the academic area who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work diligently to achieve that goal. The students are capable of completing a rigorous curriculum but need support to reach their potential.
  • Coordinating
    • This role involves leading the development of an active and participatory AVID Site Team. The coordinator is the liaison between the principal AVID counselors and AVID teachers. Responsibilities include overseeing certification and data collection engaging Site Team members in gathering evidence providing relevant data and teaching AVID classes. Collaboration with the middle school site and grade levels is essential for articulating the AVID curriculum and activities. The coordinator also advocates for and facilitates professional development on AVID methodologies for school staff. Additionally they plan college visits and AVID field trips.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TYPICAL TASKS:

  • Support the AVID program to raise the achievement level of all AVID students.
  • Serve as an advocate for AVID students in the school and in the broader community.
  • Expose students to educational experiences that help them accelerate their academic achievement learn to value their abilities and view themselves as productive lifelong learners
  • Collaborate with AVID stakeholders students parents counselors administrators and teachers to develop a program grounded in a collegegoing culture.
  • Support the development coordination monitoring and evaluation of AVID teachers and administrators in placing AVID students in rigorous curriculum.
  • Teach the AVID elective course implementing AVID curricula.
  • Collect and analyze data (grades SOL test scores attendance and referrals) to monitor the progress and success of each AVID student.
  • Support the AVID tutor recruitment training and payroll process. Mentor tutors as appropriate.
  • Cofacilitate AVID events (college visits cultural events guest speakers the opening of school activities and events and parent nights).
  • Participate on the AVID site team and attend regularly scheduled meetings throughout the year.
  • Provide ongoing professional learning that promotes the use of WICOR instructional strategies across content areas.
  • Assist with the completion of annual AVID certification requirements in a timely manner.
  • Provide ongoing evaluation of the AVID program and recommend changes improvements and additions as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of elementary secondary or special education principles practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff students administration and parents.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and possess or be eligible to acquire the appropriate license(s) and/or endorsements for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Candidates must possess demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students staff administrators and parents. The candidate must possess good moral character and is expected to be a role model in and out of school. Experience in developing and implementing talent development opportunities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classrooms gymnasium cafeteria auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking standing stooping lifting up to approximately 30 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities may be required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions noise and hazards. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Teacher Contract: 200 Days

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities by building administrators.
