Job Description

Minimum Requirements:

  • Level 3: Ph.D. in geosystems/petroleum/civil engineering or related field and 2 years relevant experience
  • Level 4: Ph.D. in geosystems/petroleum/civil engineering or related field and 4 years relevant experience
  • Background in theoretical and computational geomechanics.
  • Domain knowledge in subsurface engineering (geothermal oil and gas carbon capture/sequestration)
  • Strong coding experience with C Python and GPU acceleration
  • English written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by peerreviewed publications and conference presentations

Desired Experience

  • Understanding of subsurface physics including fluid flow multiphase flow heat transfer and geochemical.
  • Experience using INLs Multiphysics ObjectOriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) framework.
  • Experience performing thermohydromechanical coupled simulations.
  • Familiarity with the effects of geochemistry on thermohydromechanical properties of geologic systems.
  • A background in poromechanics fracture mechanics or numerical methods related to modeling fractures.
  • Strong publication record in high impact journals.
  • Understanding of funding mechanism across relevant DOE offices (GTO FECM ARPAE).

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 $93204 $191076 / Level 4 $111888 $229284. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education relevant experience and other credentials.

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Subsurface Computational Scientist to join our team in the Geothermal Energy and Subsurface Systems group. Our team works a 9x80 schedule in Idaho Falls Idaho with every other Friday off.

You will report to the Group Lead. You will have a strong background in subsurface science engineering applied mathematics or a similar field with handson experience using INLs Multiphysics ObjectOriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) framework. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop research proposals lead research programs enhance predictive capabilities and support a variety of subsurface energy and environmental applications. Proficiency in scientific programming and a commitment to advancing subsurface science are necessary for this role.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop support maintain and document advanced multiphysics analysis tools for use in specific technical subject areas.
  • Implement models methods and verification/validation strategies for these tools.
  • Perform computational studies to support assigned technical areas goals.
  • Perform data collection analysis and assimilation.
  • Participate in and potentially lead the design planning and of modeling and simulation related research and development projects.
  • Represent the interests of INL through partnerships and connections with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) other U.S. national laboratories industry technology endusers and academia.
  • Develop technical reports peerreviewed publications proposals and presentations for internal and external customers.
  • Identify and develop new program opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain uptodate knowledge in main technical areas.
  • May lead computational multiphysics methods and code development software teams.
  • Participate in professional activities university interactions special assignments and external special interest groups.
  • Mentor interns and other staff members.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
