Education and/or Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited university with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary M.D. (VMD) designation and at least three years of recent professional clinical experience in a professional animal medicine practice working with domestic animals in a veterinary hospital or other animal care setting. Prior experience working with an animal shelter and in a lead or supervisory capacity is highly desirable.
License or Certificate:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C or Class 3 California Drivers License and have a satisfactory driving record.
Possession of a professional Veterinarian license certified to practice in the State of California as approved by the State Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine.
Be the Managing Licensee for the Animal Centers premise permit and maintain a valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Theories principles and concepts of veterinary science; animal anatomy; origins causes and symptoms of various diseases; knowledge of a broad range of species and breeds of dogs cats and other domestic animals; preventative diagnostic and therapeutic veterinary treatment of domestic animals; surgical procedures and safe health care practices; administer injections and medications to all types of animals; supervisory methods and techniques; occupational hazards and safety principles and practices necessary in the area of animal services; safe work practices; safe driving principles and practices.
Analyze animal behavior and evaluate underlying causes and symptoms of diseases injuries or behavioral disorders; have an understanding of principles of animal behavior and care; recognize normal and abnormal animal behavior; determine appropriate level of medical treatment given individual cases; handle animals in a safe and caring manner; learn understand and interpret rules and regulations governing the impounding and release of animals.
Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records; operate computer equipment office equipment and software programs; operate a motor vehicle safely; meet and work tactfully and effectively with the public and a broad variety of public health officials shelter representatives and the general public; work a varied schedule; respond to requests and inquiries for information regarding animal services; work independently in the absence of supervision. Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; establish maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including staff volunteers health care professionals and the public.
Respond to cruelty and neglect cases and instruct on proper care and treatment of animals write comprehensive medical evaluations for case files and represent the City as an expert witness during legal proceedings.
Special Requirements:
Ability to work weekends evenings and holidays and oncall basis.
