Job Description

Job Title: Library Media Specialist

Location:JacksonViaElementary School

Reports to: Principal

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary:

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for serving as an instructional leader to provide access for all students and staff to information media and literature in a variety of forms and for diverse purposes. The Specialist ensures that the library media operations and resources are a fully integrated parts of the instructional program of the school and promote contemporary learning.

Essential Functions:

  • Participate in curriculum planning program development and implementation to develop a close working relationship among teachers principal and other library/media specialists
  • Collaborate with instructional staff to plan and adapt instruction to meet the needs of individual students and act as a resource for teachers as they plan instruction and instructional interventions
  • Conduct and support classes in a variety of formats to promote the use and enjoyment of literature
  • Create an open environment for learning communication and creation to help students learn go navigate contemporary learning spaces both physical and virtual
  • Provide instruction in cooperation with the staff in informational research
  • Promote the use of online databases
  • Assist users in developing skills for responsible use and interpretation of print and nonprint resources in the library media center
  • Provide equitable and varied access to high quality resources to support curriculumbased research as well as personal interest and creational reading
  • Conduct with teachers and volunteer personnel professional learning activities in the use of audiovisual equipment materials and instructional technology
  • Introduce and provide an orientation to staff and students for media collection new materials and instructional technology
  • Perform minor repairs and troubleshooting to ensure the availability of books audiovisual equipment and instructional technology
  • Recommend and process orders of books periodicals digital media etc. to maintain and improve the library media center collection based on student interest skill/reading level and curriculum requirements
  • Provide instruction to students regarding Internet safety and cyberbullying
  • Promote library media center usage related to special holiday seasonal activities etc. to motivate students to use resources
  • Model effective instruction incorporating technology integration
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal

Skills Knowledge and Abilities:

Thorough skill and knowledge of contemporary instructional methods and presentation strategies for student learners; knowledge of Internet safety protocols and cyberbullying information; working knowledge of current standard school library media center practices; facility with contemporary media resources and learning networks; ability to create an active learning environment to foster mutual respect and lifelong learning; communication skills with fellow teachers other staff parents and the community

Education and/or Experience:

Masters degree in Library Media Services or equivalent and a Virginia license as a Library Media Specialist are required. Prior experience as a teacher is preferred.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:

Duties are typically performed in school settings to include classroom gym cafeteria auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking standing light lifting up to 40 pounds and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audiovisuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Occasional attendance at parent conferences buildinglevel meetings and division wide meetings and training activities beyond normal working hours is necessary. Daily personal and close contact with students to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members and parents may be required. Contact with community and division level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy.

Evaluation:

The Library Media Specialist is evaluated by the Principal.
