The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science leading policy and advocacy campaigns and building partnerships.

We plan to spend 16bn over the next ten years funding new discoveries in life health and wellbeing and taking on three global health challenges: mental health infectious disease and climate and health.

The Infectious Disease Solutions Programme (IDSP) is looking for a Senior Research Manager with experience of managing research projects particularly within global health. You will help oversee projects focused on best use of vaccines to control infectious diseases generating evidence to support vaccine use promoting evidence informed decisionmaking and advocating for the full value of vaccines to achieve Wellcomes strategic goals in our existing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) Cholera VBD and TB research portfolios alongside contributing to the wider portfolio of activities within the Vaccines team which is one of 4 teams within IDSP.

We are looking for an individual with a passion for global health and interest in research uptake to work collaboratively across the IDSP team and Wellcome to address key gaps in the global health field and support delivery of our Vaccines portfolio.

This is an exciting time to join Wellcome under the direction of our new CEO JohnArne Rottingen who joined in 2024. The Infectious Disease Solutions Programme (IDSP) is a relatively new team and as such this is an opportune time to join and help us drive forward our strategy. The team focusses on two key drivers of infectious disease environmental change and antimicrobial resistance. We take a holistic approach combining an interest in gaining a better understanding of these drivers in order to drive the development and use of interventions. Our current focus is on vector borne disease cholera TB and AMR with a geographical focus on Africa and South SouthEast Asia.

You will be joining a multidisciplinary collaborative and enthusiastic team (the Vaccines team) focused on developing impactful vaccines for lowandmiddle income countries gaining a greater understanding of protective immunity and filling key knowledge gaps that inform policy makers on the best use of these vaccines.

In this role you will:

  • Manage an existing portfolio of research projects linked to generating evidence on the effective use of vaccines to control infectious diseases and promoting research uptake monitoring progress against milestones and facilitating necessary adjustments.

  • Identification of scientific and evidence gaps that limit optimal use of vaccines and new opportunities to promote uptake of vaccines and limit the impact of infectious diseases. Working with other stakeholders (other funders WHO Gavi UNICEF etc) to devise approaches and solutions to these gaps.

  • Contribute to the effective delivery of funding decisions for projects aligned with our strategy providing critical scientific assessment of applications participating in decisionmaking reviews and making clear recommendations to senior management.

  • Advocating for the value of vaccines as a global health priority. Clearly communicate the vaccines strategy and the Infectious Disease Solutions Programme to internal and external audiences.

  • Effectively use knowledge and expertise to manage influence and sustain longterm relationships with research teams funding partners and other global immunisation stakeholders.

  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation collaborating across departments.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • An advanced degree in the life sciences or equivalent demonstrable experience

  • Significant expertise in Infectious Disease through work in academic industrial or funding settings

  • Experience shaping and delivering immunisation research programmes

  • A strong understanding of the landscape of global health stakeholders for immunisation.

  • An interest in vaccine research and health policy issues

  • Experience in research project management and grant administration
