Job Title:Consultant in Forensic Psychiatry
Grade:Consultant
Hours:40 hours per week
Location:Crowthorne Berkshire
Rate:Competitive to be discussed upon application

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Forensic Psychiatry to join our esteemed NHS clients dynamic inpatient team based in Crowthorne Berkshire. This position is available for an immediate start offering competitive rates.

Key Responsibilities:

The Consultant in Forensic Psychiatry will be responsible for the care of 15 patients on an increased support and assertive treatment (ISAT) ward. Patients on the ISAT wards will generally require more intensive support and are more likely to display behavioural disturbance. The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of a ward manager ward nursing staff a clinical or forensic psychologist a junior doctor a social worker a security liaison nurse and an occupational therapist. They will be expected to provide leadership to the Clinical Team and coordinate the Care Plan in relation to each individual patient within the framework of the Care Programme Approach.

As part of the Clinical Team standards within the hospital the post holder will see their ISAT patients on a twicemonthly basis in addition to Clinical Team Meetings. They will be responsible for carrying out administrative duties in relation to the care of their patients including the completion of reports to the FirstTier Tribunal (Mental Health) Annual Statutory Reports to the Ministry of Justice and other statutory and nonstatutory reports within the required timescales. Additionally the post holder will liaise with other forensic units in relation to their patients.

The post holder will be required to assess patients or supervise assessments undertaken by Specialist Registrars of referrals of patients in other hospitals and prisons to provide opinions on their care and treatment and suitability for admission to conditions of high security. Assessments are divided between the consultants and senior trainees (ST46 with a consultant carrying out three to four assessments per year.

The post holder will work closely with local Forensic Services and other agencies including the Ministry of Justice in the case of Restricted Patients to facilitate the transfer or discharge of suitable patients. They will be expected to participate in the followup of any patients sent on trial leave or discharged from the hospital as necessary.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register in Forensic Psychiatry.
  • Approved Clinician status.
  • Extensive experience in forensic psychiatric settings.
  • Strong clinical leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and evidencebased practice.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience in service development and quality improvement initiatives.
