ESSENTIAL DUTIES FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides a full range of supervision to Dental Assistants (Expanded Functions) Dental Assistants (Pediatrics) and Dental Assistants (Basic). Duties include scheduling work assignments orientation training and development setting performance standards and evaluating performance timekeeping leave granting and minor disciplinary actions. Recommends selections promotions awards disciplinary actions; deals with employee suggestions complaints grievances and other matters in the daytoday operations. Manages the daily operations of the clinic.
- Ensures that the clinic is adequately staffed and that patients are being seen in an efficient and professional manner in accordance with FDIHB Dental policies.
- Ensures that housekeeping and maintenance services are provided determines supply and equipment needs ensures that supplies are ordered and stored properly and that equipment is maintained and replaced as needed.
- Ensures the maintenance of reporting and record systems related to patient care and progress notes according to established FDIHB policies.
- Plans and prepares/adjusts work schedules on a monthly basis to meet objectives priorities and deadlines. Makes changes in the organization of work and assignments of tasks to improve workflow and dental services. Devises and implements methods to control and assess the quality and effectiveness of work or services provided by assigned personnel.
- Identifies needs related to budget space staffing delivery of services and coordination of program with other hospital departments.
- Establishes and maintains records for Deferred Services needs and 437 Codes. Submits the annual Deferred Services report to the Chief Dental Officer.
- Ensures that the quality and quantity of treatment provided is acceptable.
- Completes reports as assigned and requested by the Chief Dental Officer and other Supervisory Dental Officers.
- Signs and approves leave for subordinates. Counsels employees regarding leave usage performance discipline and conduct.
- Prepares formal evaluation of employees performance. Advises employees of performance requirements of their positions and their individual progress in meeting those requirements.
- Conducts inservice trainings to departmental staff on new methods procedures and equipment.
- Interviews candidates/applicants for vacancies within the department. Informally recommends employees for awards or bonuses such as but not limited to: promotion reassignment step increases and performance awards.
- Informs employees about management policies procedures goals and objectives which relate to the work of the unit.
- Establishes policies and procedures for the operation of the department and submits policies to the Chief Dental Officer for approval. Ensures that policies and procedures are reviewed every 24 months by the Chief Dental Officer. Implements and monitors compliance with the Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) standards.
- Implements and monitors safety measures to prevent accidents to patients and personnel. Makes certain that the overall safety program of the hospital is observed.
- Maintains a quality assurance program in accordance with the FDIHB Quality Assessment Performance Improvement (QAPI) in regards to Dental Assistant Chart Audits Radiology Certification Periodontal Therapy Certification Expanded Functions Assisting Dental Assistant Technical Quality Review Clinical Efficiency Indicators Productivity Indicators Efficient Staffing Indicators and Unscheduled Leave Use Indicators.
- Supervises and monitors examinations and procedures performed by subordinates. Advises subordinates of deficiencies and takes action to prevent the reoccurrence of such deficiencies.
- Schedules the daytoday workload in accordance with priority and need. Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and coordinates patient priorities with clinical staffing patterns to accommodate them.
- Ensures that all persons working with xray equipment are recorded and monitored for exposure to ionizing radiation on a monthly basis. Chief Dental Officer and Safety Officer review exposure records. Makes certain that persons occupationally exposed to radiation are in full compliance of radiation safety regulations.
- Implements departmental long range plans and to assist with maintaining CMS accreditation.
- Recommends short intermediate and long term goals and objectives for departmental planning.
- Recommends changes and improvements relating to services staffing operations and expansion. Represents the department at institutional meetings activities and to external agencies and organizations as assigned.
- Coordinates oversees plans organizes implements and evaluates preventive oral health programs for various patient groups such as diabetic pediatric (Well Child Clinic WIC MCH) geriatric cancer psychiatric and physically and mentally handicapped patients.
- Develops and revises oral health instructional materials education programs and other communitybased interventions.
- Monitors inventory including equipment and supplies then prepares work orders for repairs and maintenance to either Area Biomed Dental or Facilities Management. Works with Dental Department Secretary to order direct issue supplies and coordinates the Fort Defiance Dental Clinic Warehouse issue books.
- Provides training and orientation for new employees. Supervises ongoing training for subordinates. Determines training needs and develops Individual Development Plans (IDP) for employees supervised. Identifies and utilizes resources and materials for continuing education.
- Develops liaison with Dental Assistant Training Centers for new developments in dental assisting and dentistry in general.
- Arranges for supplemental training for specific deficiencies in the performance of subordinates.
- Performs prophylaxis (with hand or ultrasonic instruments) and application of topical fluoride.
- Assists the Dentist at the chair to perform all surgical periodontal endodontic prosthetic pediatric and emergency procedures.
- Exposes processes and mounts both intra and extraoral radiographs.
- Maintains the dental unit in a clean condition at all times. Instruments are cleaned prepackaged sterilized and stored according to procedure.
- Obtains and records all patient identification information. Records all epidemiological and service information as dictated by the dentist.
- Greets and seats patients adjusts chair to proper height and position and drapes patients. Ascertains chief complaint for Dental Officer and explains to patient what is to be done during treatment.
- Provides patients with chair side health education information and dismisses patient with proper postoperative instruction.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MANDATORY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Seven 7 years of direct work experience.
Education: Completion of an accredited Dental Assistant program and a Certified Dental Assistant program.
