Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America serving Cook DuPage Will Lake Kane and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe reliable and efficient commuter service.

Mechanical coordinates and oversees the repair inspection cleaning rebuilding replacing and maintenance of 1180 pieces of rolling stock used in commuter service. The departments goal is to provide safe clean and reliable service while maintaining the fleet to the standards of the Federal Railroad Administration Association of American Railroads American Public Transit Association and the original equipment manufacturers.

Reporting to the Senior Director Mechanical Capital Projects the Sr Mgr Mechanical & Electrical Rolling Stock Engineering oversees all engineering functions of mechanical pneumatic and electrical systems for large complex capital rolling stock projects which include modification campaigns overhauls and procurement of new rolling stock. The Senior Manager Mechanical & Electrical Rolling Stock Engineering supervises a team of three Mechanical Engineers and four Electrical Engineers.

The Primary Duties include: Supervise the preparation of mechanical and electrical design packages including technical specifications drawings technical calculations scope schedule and budgets for the procurement of mechanical and electrical designs and systems for rolling stock projects. Participate in the contract award process including reviewing designs and technical drawings; supervising material testing first article inspections change orders and contract modifications for accuracy and compliance with federal and municipal regulations and codes design standards and project specifications; and negotiating costs. Prepare designs material lists and cost estimates for the installation and repair of mechanical equipment to be performed inhouse. Coordinate and monitor the work of contractors ensuring services are delivered on time within budget and according to specifications; assist in resolving manufacturing problems; and inspect completed work for compliance with design and engineering standards. Lead engineering teams in testing and assessing equipment for state of good repair resolving manufacture and design issues and recommending and overseeing equipment repair maintenance and/or replacement based on cost efficiencies. Approve time off coordinate staff schedules fill vacancies as necessary and ensure compliance with departmental and company policies and objectives. Decide/implement staffing decisions performance evaluations and performance improvement disciplinary and/or termination procedures. Make recommendations regarding hiring performance evaluations disciplinary and/or termination procedures. Works under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat cold rain and snow. Perform otherrelated duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act not the Social Security Administration.

  1. Bachelors degree in either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  2. In addition to #1 must have seven years of mechanical engineering experience in railroad mechanical operations or railroad manufacturing which includes rail vehicle overhauls and project management.
  3. Must have three years of direct or indirect supervisory experience that may encompass dayto day employee or consultant/contractor management assigning tasks providing guidance and training monitoring performance and budgeting.
  4. Comprehensive knowledge of the operation repair overhaul and maintenance of rolling stock and maintenance facilities.
  5. Comprehensive knowledge of the principles theories and methods of mechanical engineering including the knowledge of mechanical systems design installation and maintenance.
  6. Comprehensive knowledge of all applicable local state and federal regulations as they apply to passenger rolling stock as well as AAR guidelines and APTA passenger equipment safety standards.
  7. Comprehensive knowledge of quality assurance and quality control principles.
  8. Good knowledge of the MaximoAsset Management Program Microsoft Dynamics D365 and Microsoft Office Suite.
  9. Strong organizational analytical and critical thinking skills.
  10. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  11. Strong management leadership and interpersonal skills.
  12. Expert level of skill both reading and interpreting comprehensive mechanical drawings and schematics.
  13. Proficiency in the use of Auto CAD and/or Microstation.
  14. Must be CFR 238 218 and 217 QMP certified or be able to attain certification within 60 days of hire.
  15. Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.
  16. Ability to stand walk and/or sit for extended periods of time.
  17. Hearing/Visual acuity far/near depth perception field of vision color vision.
  18. Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds.
  19. Must be able to operate a vehicle.
  20. Must be willing to travel within and outside of Metras 6county region.
  21. Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning late afternoon evenings or weekends.

Preferred:

  1. PMP certification.
  2. Professional Engineers (PE) license.
