Job Description

The Village of Buffalo Grove (population 42482 is seeking qualified candidates for the position of FullTime Maintenance Worker within the Public Works (Fleet Section). As an APWAaccredited agency Buffalo Grove Public Works is committed to developing highquality innovative services that leverage technology to enhance service efficiency. Ideal candidates should have experience in public works or similar field as well as strong proficiency in using technology. This includes desktop computers mobile devices and the ability to effectively track and report work completed.

This is skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automobiles trucks heavy equipment small equipment gasoline and diesel engines emergency services equipment. Successful candidates will have the ability to inspect diagnose and make repairs under the supervision of the Fleet Manager or Fleet Crew Leader.

In addition to the regular assigned duties within the Fleet Maintenance Section the Maintenance Worker will be expected to perform after hours (overtime) duties as part of the annual winter maintenance program for the Village of Buffalo Grove. The Maintenance Worker will be expected to perform after hours (overtime) duties to assist with underground Utility excavation and repairs (water sanitary storm) as needed.


Working Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Duties are primarily performed in the shop while standing or bending over vehicles and may require travel to emergency sites to ensure equipment operation. Employees risk physical hazard from mechanical and electrical equipment exhaust fumes hot motors and objects grease chemicals and solvents. Regular lifting of heavy materials and equipment such as parts tires fans or fire hoses ranging in weight from 2050 lbs. is required. Physical exertion may be required to climb ladders or large equipment work in cramped spaces for long periods of time with arms extended. May be required to work outside in varying weather conditions. Subject to 24hour a day call back for emergency repairs.

Essential Duties

  • Performs general overhaul and repairs on gasoline and diesel engines; replaces pistons piston rings valves main bearings crankshafts cylinder head and gaskets; tests tunes and adjusts carburetors and ignition systems.
  • Repairs and overhauls transmissions differentials clutch assemblies power take offs and front and rear end assemblies; replaces broken axles and springs.
  • Repairs hydraulic systems including pumps lines and connections; rebuilds hydraulic cylinders.
  • Inspects adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts including brakes cooling air conditioning ignition electrical and fuel systems mufflers and exhaust pipes.
  • Installs maintains and repairs light bars sirens public address systems and citizen band radios in public safety vehicles.
  • Perform limited bodywork and painting; may do minor welding and blacksmithing work related to repairs or for parts fabrication.
  • Road tests vehicles to check effectiveness of repairs; records repairs made parts used and hours expended.
  • Performs related work as required.

Education & Experience

  • Graduation from high school; and considerable experience as an automotive mechanic at the full skilled crafts level; or any equivalent combination of training and experience

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Must possess a valid class B Illinois Commercial drivers license or the ability to obtain one within six months from your first date of employment.

  • ASE certifications or the ability to obtain them within 1 year from your first date of employment

  • Must have achieved (or achieve within 6 months from date of employment) section 609 of the Federal Clean Air Act in the proper use of Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning refrigerant recovery and recycling equipment.

  • Shall possess (or possess within 6 months from date of employment) Brake Inspector Qualifications 49 CFR part 369.25.

  • Considerable skill in using electronic diagnostic equipment including Ford Diagnostic Software and other standard diagnostic tools.

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods materials tools and techniques used in the repair of automotive equipment.

  • Must provide standard mechanic tool set and toolbox up to and including one inch drive sockets

  • Electric Drive Train knowledge is preferred.

  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

  • Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment.

  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to interpret and work from service manuals specifications and diagrams.

  • Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.

  • Ability to meet such physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.

  • Follows safety policies and procedures.

  • Reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor.

  • Reports all accidents to supervisor immediately.

  • Follows recognized safe work practices.

Supplemental Information

The salary range for this position is $75291.84 $36.19/hour) to $112209.76 $53.94/hour) based on 2080 annual hours (DOQ). Overtime is an expectation of this position and requires the ability to report to work within one 1 hour of contact. Overtime is paid at a compensatory rate of 1.5 unless worked on an observed holiday at which point the rate is 2.0. Fulltime employees are allowed to convert overtime hours worked into Comp time equivalent to the OT rate earned and bank to use those hours in accordance with Policy and Procedure at a later time. Full time employees are assigned to a call back schedule for the duration of the winter season as part of snow & ice control or utility repair crews.

Full time employees are provided a full suite of PTO including Vacation Holiday Sick Comp etc. (some forms of PTO are earned/accruedand may be prorated during your first partial year of service).

Fulltime employees are provided with a cell phone through the department. Fulltime employees also receive an annual work wear stipend and are provided with all necessary PPE upon hiring.
