POSITION: Fish Culturist I/II

SALARY: $20.04 $21.26 per hour DOE

REPORTS TO: Technician Lead

LOCATION: Bridgeport Washington

Basic Functions:The Fish Culturist I/II performs a variety of tasks primarily focused on the culture and distribution of anadromous fish. Typical duties include the collection care and maintenance of brood fish; collection and care of eggs and all phases of fish rearing and distribution. The incumbent monitors fish health inventories live fish manipulates feed and environmental conditions to encourage optimum growth and development and administers prescribed treatments. Duties may also include all aspects of facility maintenance fin marking PIT tagging and biological data collection. The Fish Culturist I/II operate and maintain a variety of hatchery equipment and identifies and reports any repair or safety issues to senior hatchery personnel. Incumbents may live in hatchery provided housing if available and be on standby for rapid response to hatchery issues outside of normal duty hours. Standby may be assigned regardless of housing if management deems it necessary. Additional compensation will be provided for staff assigned standby without housing.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training:

Fish Culturist I:

  • High school diploma and satisfactory work history including average or above average attendance.
  • Must possess a valid Drivers License and be eligible for coverage under the Tribes vehicle insurance.

Fish Culturist II:

  • AAS degree in Fisheries Technology Aquaculture or related field OR;Four years of progressive fish culture experience.
  • Must possess a valid Drivers License and be eligible for coverage under the Tribes vehicle insurance.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Performs activities pertaining to the care and maintenance of brood and juvenile fish collection and care of eggs and all phases of fish rearing and distribution.
  • Responsible for live egg handling egg picking inventory and incubation of eggs inventorying live fish calculating feed rates and administering feed.
  • Monitors fish health examines fish for disease symptoms and nutritional disorders. Administers treatments under the direction of a Hatchery Manager or Senior Culturist.
  • Monitors and operates hatchery equipment including pumps filters generators power tools.
  • Performs routine adjustments and repairs.
  • Elevates more complex maintenance and repair issues to senior hatchery personnel.
  • Monitors water temperature and dissolved gas levels of water supplies to ensure constant delivery of optimal quantity and quality of water to incubation and rearing units.
  • Assists in transfers and planting of fish. Monitors fish condition in transit adjusts life support equipment to provide an optimum environment during transit and properly acclimates fish to new environment prior to release.
  • Participates in fin marking and PIT tagging operations.
  • Assists with biological data collection.
  • Responds to hatchery alarms. Takes emergency action as needed to protect fish stocks Immediately elevates more complex issues to appropriate hatchery employees.
  • Cleans tanks filters raceways troughs ponds incubators screens and work areas.
  • Maintains hatchery grounds and facilities including but not limited to landscaping lawn mowing and brush removal.
  • Performs data entry and analysis using computers and software.
  • Provides assistance to other Tribal hatcheries on an as needed basis.
  • Must be willing and able to work long shifts on a variable schedule including: nights early mornings holidays and weekends as the work dictates.
  • Ability to work effectively in multicultural environment.
  • Must be willing to travel for work projects meetings training and conference participation as necessary.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to preemployment drug testing. In addition this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and postaccident drug testing.

TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.

If required of this position you must possess and maintain avalid Washington State drivers license and be eligible for the Tribes Vehicle Insurance. In addition this position may be subject to preemployment background clearances. If applicable these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
