Are you someone who loves the outdoors and is passionate about becoming a natural resources forester working for Washington State If you love working in the outdoors appreciate a remote natural environment have good practical forestry skills a working knowledge of timber harvesting methods and enjoy being part of a highfunctioning team then this might be the job for you.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Northeast Region is looking for three State Lands Foresters to join our North Columbia unit. These positions under the supervision of the Unit foresters will have regular interaction with foresters forest engineers other natural resource professionals other agency/organization members and the general public. These positions have responsibilities within the Presales program to include performing as a lead forester on timber sales and timber sale contract compliance including regeneration and other silvicultural practices with a harvest level of approximately 18MMBF per year. This position may also support the fire suppression program during peak workloads.

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Timber sale planning design and layout including stream type determination identification of potentially sensitive areas boundary location and marking reserve and legacy tree identification and marking identifying appropriate harvest systems and locating roads to access landing locations.
  • Timber sale design that provides appropriate resource protection identified in DNR policies procedures and forest practices requirements.
  • Communication and consultation with the public specialists and external partners.
  • Harvest plan development that ensures economic and operational viability.
  • Timber sale document preparation including SEPA Forest Practices applications Silvicultural prescriptions and GIS maps.
  • Timber sale contract development compliance and closeout.
  • Timber cruising to evaluate current and planned harvest areas.

Qualifications

This may be filled as an intraining position.This is designated as a 1224 month training plan. If you complete all elements of the training steps in a shorter amount of time we may waive the remainder of the time required. Candidates will be considered asNatural Resource Specialist 1 (InTraining)orNatural Resource Specialist 2 (NRS2depending on qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
Natural Resource Specialist 1 (InTraining)
(Salary range: $3811 $5117 per month):

  • AA degree in forestry or a Natural Resource related field of study or a combination of education and/or experience equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of forest management objectives timber management objectives and silvicultural practices.
  • Knowledge of GPS equipment and ESRI GIS program to map unit boundaries and road layouts.
  • Knowledge of contracting procedures.
  • Knowledge of logging and forest road layout.
  • Experience using computer applications such as Arc GIS Microsoft Word Excel and Outlook etc.
  • Shown ability to work independently or as part of a team on assigned tasks and adapt to changing needs.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity equity inclusion and environmental justice practices.
  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.

(Salary range: $4299 $5783 per month):
  • A bachelors degree in forestry or a Natural Resourcerelated field of study or a combination of education and/or experience equivalent.
  • Experience with forest management objectives timber management objectives and silvicultural practices.
  • Experience with GPS equipment and ESRI GIS program to map unit boundaries and road layouts.
  • Experience with contracting procedures.
  • Logging and forest road layout experience.
  • Experience in computer applications such as Arc GIS Microsoft Word Excel and Outlook etc.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Shown ability to work independently or as part of a team on assigned tasks and adapt to changing needs.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Positions assigned duty station is the Northeast Region Office in Colville WA. The large majority 80 of work is performed in isolated unimproved natural areas. Sometimes the incumbent may work alone. The remaining 20 work is performed in an office or training environment. The incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Position requires a large amount of time in the field traveling alone between timber sales contract administration sites fires and work centers. On occasion travel throughout the region other regions or Olympia for meetings temporary assignments and training sessions may be required.
  • A valid unrestricted drivers license and two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Contract Development and Administration for Timber Sales Road Construction Reforestation Thinning or other Silvicultural Practices.
  • Experience complying with forest practices requirements for wetland and stream delineation for eastern Washington.
  • Knowledge of employment rules and regulations as they apply to permanent seasonal career and seasonal DNR employees.
  • Experience with Wildfire and Prescribed Fire.
