This is a one year position for theacademic year. There is a possibility for the position to become a permanent appointment. The Middle School theater program at Abington Friends School focuses on building effective communication through exploring creating and finding our own stories. With an emphasis on ensemble work and group process students explore their creativity both as individuals and as part of a team. Units in creative storytelling improvisation playwriting design and performance allow students to experience the broad range of skills theater fosters in students. Fifth through eighth grade students take theater classes throughout the year and every student in the Middle School has the opportunity to audition for (or work behind the scenes of) the annual production.
The job of theater teacher includes:
Designing and implementing curriculum for each of the theater classes.
Serving as a middle school advisor and collaborating with colleagues on a grade team.
Producing and directing the annual production which can be a play or a musical.
Collaborating with middle school faculty to integrate and compliment each others curriculum.
Performing the responsibilities of a Middle School faculty member which can include participating in faculty meetings supervising lunches and break times attendingMeeting For Worship leading a club or activity leading affinity groups and others.

Educational & Professional background:
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a Bachelors degree in Theatre or Theatre Education (or Equivalent Professional experience) and three years experience as a theatre educator in the classroom or arts education/outreach. Directing experience with young people is important and a directing resume should be included with application materials. A demonstrated appreciation and enjoyment of middle school students and an understanding of the developmental phases they navigate is essential.
