The Department of Neurology at the University of Iowa is seeking a dedicated and organized Research Associate to manage the daily research operations of two Neurology Department laboratories under the guidance of active clinicianscientists and PIs Dr. George Richerson and Dr. Nandakumar Narayanan. This position will also assist with work in the lab of Georgina Aldridge. Core responsibilities involve purchasing equipment and supplies providing onboarding and ongoing training for new and experienced personnel maintaining lab protocols performing basic and complex procedures and managing mouse colonies.
Responsibilities include:
- Assist with daytoday operations in three Neurology Department laboratories.
- Manage the animal care facilities including compliance and animal welfare.
- Perform mouse and rat surgery. Troubleshoot issues and answer questions as needed.
- Assist with breeding genotyping and collecting data from animals.
- Assist in preparation and data gathering for grant budgets yearly budgets.
- Update amend and renew ACURFS (Animal Care and Use Research Facility System) and rDNA (recombinant DNA) protocols.
- Ensure laboratories are in compliance with all federal and state regulations pertaining to health protections as well as ensuring compliance for all EHS and IACUC regulations.
- Oversee general equipment upkeep cleaning and maintenance. Maintain all lab equipment is meeting safety and standard protocols.
- Ensure maintenance and service contracts for lab equipment are uptodate.
- Order supplies and reconcile accounting with University pcards and travel.
- Assist with the onboarding of new lab personnel ensuring they are properly oriented to lab procedures and safety protocols.
- Provide ongoing training on basic and new lab techniques and protocols.
- Monitor and ensure all lab staff complete and maintain compliance courses and standards.
- Instruct students and new hires in assuring the appropriate chemicals materials and equipment are available and used appropriately.
- Provide direction assignments feedback and counseling to lab personnel to track progress and assure outcomes are achieved.
- Oversee and assist in managing calendars for several principal investigators.

- Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Neuroscience degree preferred.
- 1 3 years of related research experience. Experience with animal research preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate (written and spoken) effectively with collaborators.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with PCR mice rats ear punches and genotyping
- Previous experience performing immunohistochemistry and cryostat sectioning or other neuroscience techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to help train students or other staff members.
- Strong organizational skills ability to take initiative and ability to work independently.
- Knowledge of University of Iowa policies and procedures.
