The University of Hawaii at Hilo is a state university with a private college atmosphere. We offer small class sizes a low facultytostudent ratio and opportunities for undergraduate research. We are located in the colorful town of Hilo which is surrounded by natural beauty on the Island of Hawaii.

The successful candidate will have ample opportunity to collaborate with natural scientists studying the living laboratory of this island and will also be able to make an impact on our dynamic Marine Science Department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach undergraduate and MS level courses on campus and labs on board the departments research vessel including but not limited to: Physical Oceanography introductory Oceanography lecture and laboratory Coastal and/or Pelagic Methods and Analyses and undergraduate and graduate courses in the applicants specialty 9 credits/semester with potential for buyouts)
  2. Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
  3. Conduct research preferably in nearshore waters and coral reefs and publish results
  4. Participate in departmental community and university service
  5. Possibly participate in summer courses for additional compensation

Minimum qualifications:

  1. A Ph.D. in Oceanography or closely related discipline or a Ph.D. in Physics with experience in the area of physical oceanography at the time of appointment.
  2. Peerreviewed publication record.
  3. University level teaching experience.
  4. Experience mentoring student research

Desirable qualifications:

  1. Postdoctoral experience; coastal waters and coral reef research experience.
  2. Fieldbased physical oceanography experience from small boats.
  3. Research that includes biological applications of physical oceanography.
  4. Demonstrated ability to acquire external research funding.
  5. Record of teaching at the university level in discipline.
  6. The ability and a plan to develop:
    1. coastal oceanography research
    2. research in Hawaii and the insular Pacific region
    3. collaboration with department faculty on integrated research and
    4. incorporating undergraduates in research.
