The Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP) University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa) seeks applicants for a fulltime permanent tenuretrack faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (F3M11. We are looking for individuals with interests and skills to take advantage of the growing opportunities to design fabricate and launch Cube satellites (and more generally micro satellite) in support of Earth and planetary sciences. HIGP is a multidisciplinary unit in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the UH Manoa an R1 research university.


HIGP solves fundamental problems in Earth and Planetary Science by the invention development and application of stateoftheart instrumentation exploration measurement and data analysis technologies and techniques. Programs embrace research and education in small satellite (and CubeSat) technologies for exploration of the Earth and planets; insitu analysis of extraterrestrial materials from comets asteroids meteorites and planetary sample return to study the evolution of the Solar System; remote spectroscopic measurements of the surface and atmospheres of the planets and moons of our Solar System including Mercury Venus the Moon Mars and Titan; invention and fabrication of hyperspectral imagers spectrometers and other instruments to make those measurements; materials science and mineral physics for characterizing the properties of materials under extreme conditions; geological and geophysical processes of importance to the State of Hawaii including seismic volcanic and tsunami hazards as well as programs related to the water and energy security of Hawaii (the Hawaii Groundwater and Geothermal Resources Center). HIGP maintains stateoftheart facilities and instrumentation to support this work including the Hawaii Space Flight Laboratory (a collaborative venture with the College of Engineering) the W.M. Keck Cosmochemistry Laboratory the Advanced Electron Microscopy Center and the InfraSound Laboratory.


HIGP faculty contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching on campus and HIGP offers an undergraduate certificate in Earth and Planetary Exploration Technology which provides science and engineering majors with the skills required to design satellite missions to explore our Solar System.


HIGP includes the Hawaii NASA Space Grant Consortium which provides a variety of education and fellowship programs at K12 undergraduate graduate and professional levels to support workforce development in Hawaii and outreach to the local community.


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conduct original research in the field of cube satellite and micro satellite technology and associated engineering.
  2. Pursue and obtain extramural funding to support a vigorous research program.
  3. Regularly publish findings in appropriate peerreviewed journals and disciplinespecific publications.
  4. Teach at least one 1 undergraduate course per academic year in support of HIGPs Earth and Planetary Exploration Technology undergraduate certificate and/or other collaborative teaching ventures between UH Manoa Colleges. Also contribute fully to a capstone design class in Cube Satellite technology.
  5. Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students and supervise research assistants and postdoctoral fellows as required.
  6. Provide experiential learning/research opportunities for undergraduate students.
  7. Play a full and positive role in contributing as a HIGP faculty member to Institute governance.
  8. Provide service to SOEST UH Manoa the local community and the wider scientific community that is aligned with the appointees core discipline.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. A doctorate degree from a college or university of recognized standing and in a field relevant to the position (e.g. electrical mechanical or aerospace engineering; physics)obtained by the time of appointment.
  2. Demonstrated ability to generate independent research reports publications and grant proposals.
  3. Demonstrated scholarly achievement in the field of Cube Satellites and associated subsystems such as a record of publications in scholarly journals.
  4. Demonstrated handson experience working with Cube Satellites and their associated subsystems (i.e. project specific experience related to for example electrical and power subsystems; attitude determination and control; command and data handling; development of link budgets; spacecraft structures; software).
  5. Commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring students.
  6. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.


Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Familiarity with design reviews and project management related to Cube Satellites (e.g. preliminary design reviews and critical design reviews) and demonstrated ability to lead undergraduate students through such reviews.
  2. Ability to work with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or Export Administration Regulations (EAR) controlled technology.
