Job Description

The salary for this role is 67023 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days each week however we actively support requests for flexible working. 

This role is based at the following site; Culham Oxfordshire.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data. 

The Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Senior Safety Case Engineer you will play a pivotal role in managing the delivery of the Safety Case for the UKAEA current fusion facilities (JET/MAST/AGHS) and to provide technical leadership as a Senior Safety Case Engineer. You will lead the development and maintenance of the Safety case for the facilities within Tritium portfolio ensuring fit for purpose and timely submission of the relevant safety case documentation. The output provides assurance to the Authority that all process hazards are identified and managed to meet the requirements of legislation.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Manage the development and maintenance of Safety Cases for the UKAEA current fusion facilities (JET/MAST/AGHS); working with ATO holders to ensure these are prepared as required and with the Chief Engineer function in the fitness for service assessment of implemented safety related equipment. 
  • Manage the assessment of modifications and provide advice to designers on the safety implications of their proposals. Engage and respond to external peer reviewers who are necessary in order to independently assure the effectiveness of UKAEA safety cases and safety arguments.
  • Coordinate expertise from within the UKAEA and from external specialist service providers to deliver Safety Case and Safety Engineering activities. CPM to 12 contracts 100k pa).
  • Accountable to the Safety Case Team Leader for the delivery of the Technical Authority Function (Safety Case).
  • Identify influence and encourage continual improvement to ensure that the UKAEA Safety Cases reflect relevant good practice across the industry (both fission and fusion).
  • Seek relevant contacts and influence across the nuclear industry on an ongoing basis in order to enhance the effectiveness of the UKAEA Safety Case activities and the organisations standing in the wider community.
  • Coordinate expertise from within the UKAEA and from external specialist service providers to deliver Safety Case and Safety Engineering activities.
  • Complete the production and periodic review of UKAEA Facility Safety Cases. This involves obtaining and collating information from those managing the Facility Health Physics Waste Management and Safety Group and selecting and summarising information relevant to the safety case. It involves carrying out probabilistic risk assessment and selecting appropriate values and models.
  • Manage assessments of Safety Case Modifications. This involves collecting information from the Responsible Officer for the modification and from the facility manager. It involves reviewing the existing safety case and determining whether the safety limits are being challenged
  • Produce Technical Reports in support of the Safety Case. This would involve research into assessment methods and selecting an appropriate methodology.
  • Manage the provision of Safety Case support to DEMO contracts.
  • Present Safety Cases to Site Safety Working Party.
  • Deputise for Safety Case Engineering Team leader at Site Safety Working Party Machine Protection Working Group and other meetings as required.
  • Attend and input into the Design Review process.
  • Contribute to ensuring modern best practices methodologies and technologies are followed.
  • Maintain and develop safety case production software and intranet.
  • Support consultants staff and direct them to find relevant information.

Qualifications :

Essential:

  • Degree Level Science or Engineering Qualification.
  • Extensive demonstrable experience in Safety Case Production.
  • Extensive experience in performing Design Basis Analysis (DBA) and Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA).
  • Completed HAZOP HAZAN (Hazard Identification and Analysis) FMECA (Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis) and Safety Case Writers training.
  • Experience chairing and facilitating HAZOP studies.
  • Experience managing a highly technical team including matrix management of teams of 24 professionals including contractors responsible for motivation performance and project completion.
