TITLE:

Plumber

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Foreman perform a variety of duties to install maintain operate upgrade diagnose and repair plumbing and gas systems within the Framingham Public Schools and other City of Framingham properties when needed.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:

Possess a journeymans license in both plumbing and gasfitting.

Must also possess and maintain a Massachusetts drivers license and a good driving record.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of 5 years prior experience in a large complex multibuilding facility. Be fully knowledgeable of plumbing and gas standards techniques and applicable codes and be able to satisfactorily apply the same.

Possess good interpersonal skills and be able to work easily with others. Possess the mental emotional and physical capabilities to perform all required tasks including the ability to bend stoop and lift moderately heavy objects and work on ladders scaffolding and high places. At the discretion of the Director of Buildings and Grounds alternatives to the above may be found acceptable and appropriate.

Ability to read interpret and diagnose problems from work requests blueprints verbal and written instructions to install and repair plumbing and gas systems. Ability to perform skilled plumbing and gasfitting work in maintenance repair alteration or construction expected in the trade; to communicate clearly and concisely with staff; to work independently prioritize tasks and manage several projects simultaneously; to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements state and federal laws and Framingham Public Schools policies; have a good prior work record with respect to performance congeniality tardiness absenteeism honesty and dependability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• From written or verbal instructions diagnoses tests repairs and installs plumbing and gas systems traps sinks water closets urinals water systems valves (mixing relief) pumps (sump ejector circulating) laboratory type plumbing dishwashers and other kitchen equipment hot water heaters and boilers piping sanitary and drain systems and all other types of plumbing and gasfitting components.
• Develops cost estimates for all types of related work.
• Applies for and obtains plumbing permits as required by code.
• Orders plumbing supplies equipment and material that may be required.
• Inspects the quality of work done by others reporting back to the supervisor any deficiencies and recommendations for corrective action.
• Reads and interprets plans sketches and blueprints.
• Follows the rules of safety adopted by the City of Framingham.
• Maintains a stock of supplies and materials of standardized items.
• Works overtime at night on weekends and holidays per the request and directions of the Buildings and Grounds supervisor.
• Maintains in good operating condition all hand and power tools required for effective maintenance.
• Performs regular preventive maintenance to assure maximum efficiency of all plumbing gas and heating systems.
• Keeps abreast of all safety and building codes and maintains all required licenses.
• Performs all necessary paperwork required of the position.
• Performs other duties related or otherwise that may be required or requested for the overall general benefit of the School District.
• Maintains a clean and orderly work area including Districtassigned work truck.
• Thoroughly cleans areas after performance of all jobs.
• Performs all patching and repair that may be required.
• Reports all deficiencies to their supervisor.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position requires the individual to be able to work on hands and knees and other awkward positions for extended periods work alone and work off ladders staging hydraulic lifts and equipment.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to bend sit move hear and speak. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. The employee is required to work in restricted spaces to include crawling and/or climbing as working at heights. Required to stand be on feet and move around for a full work shift. The employee must be able to work using ladders scaffolding mechanical lifts and district vehicles. Ability to spend most of the workday standing lifting and walking. Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and move heavier materials using appropriate equipment. While performing the duties of this job the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals. Wearing of protective equipment and safety equipment per OSHA regulations as required.

REPORTS TO:

Maintenance Foreman of Buildings and Grounds. The performance of this job will be evaluated as per the Framingham Custodial Services (Unit C) Contract.

This position is classified as NonExempt

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Covered under Framingham School Custodial Services Contract.

This position is 40 hours per week Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
