Title: (Casual Hire) Japanese Language Instructors

Position Number: CASUAL

Hiring Unit: Outreach College International Programs

Location: Manoa Campus

Salary:$37 46.50 hourly

Full Time/Part Time: Parttime

Temporary/Permanent: Temporary

****Applicants seeking shortterm or parttime work with the University of Hawaii may apply for Casual Hire appointments which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or instructionaltype positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits provided to regular Board of Regents or Civil Service employees. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for fulltime employees and up to 1 calendar year for parttime employees.

Other Conditions:

  • For placement in Instructor applicant pool for 2025 and future semesters.
  • Positions are for shortterm parttime noncredit instructors with International Programs.
  • Contingent upon registration position availability course offerings departmental need and funding.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Instructors:
    1. Prepare for and teach all scheduled classes according to the established curriculum guidelines
    2. Developing lessons and curriculum as needed
    3. Assist students with course material outside of regular class hours as needed
    4. Complete programrelated administrative responsibilities (keep attendance records communicate with office help plan and participate in program events)
    5. Participate in faculty meetings as assigned

  • Assistant Lead Instructor (all of above plus):
    1. Assists other instructors with their courses
    2. Distributes course flyers for posting.

  • Lead Instructor (all of above plus):
    1. Assists other instructors with their courses
    2. Distributes course flyers for posting
    3. Coordinates handling of Japanese conversation partners
    4. Reviews UH Form 9 collected from new conversation partners applicants
    5. Communicates with staff for planning and running the courses.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Functionally native oral and written fluency in Japanese.
  • The ability to communicate in English.
  • A minimum of 6 months of teaching experiences.
  • Bachelors from a fouryear higher education institution in Japan/US in related fields to the Japanese language/culture/history equivalent or a Bachelors in Education.
  • Familiarity with Zoom application.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with adult learners and communicate clearly.
  • If qualified applicants are not available those not meeting the minimum qualifications may be considered on an exception basis.

Desirable Qualifications

  • A few years of teaching experience at postsecondary level of education.
  • Masters in Japanese Linguistics Education or Second Language Studies or Masters in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Japanese.
  • Familiarity with communicative language teaching approaches.
