Job Description

AbbVie Biologics Analytical Research & Development (Biologics Analytical R&D) is a global analytical sciences organization responsible for all CMC analytical activities related to the development of AbbVies pharmaceutical products. The biologics characterization group develops stateoftheart analytical techniques for indepth characterization of therapeutic proteins and other novel biologic molecules using separation science mass spectrometry and other biophysical techniques. We are looking for diverse candidates with strong scientific and leadership experience to join the AbbVie Analytical R&D team and can offer exciting and rewarding career opportunities for these candidates. 

The candidate will focus on development and implementation of analytical assays for the deep characterization of complex biologics including antibodies antibody drug conjugates gene therapies and oligonucleotide/RNA therapeutics. The candidate will use a variety of analytical techniques including chromatography electrophoresis surface plasmon resonance DLS AF4 MALS ELISA and mass spectrometry. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and testing of complex biophysical assays and will contribute to the continuous improvement and innovation within the group. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Effectively function as a senior research scientist generating original technical ideas and research or development strategies. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to resolve key project hurdles and assumptions by effectively utilizing available information and technical expertise. 
  • Independently responsible for project science within his/her area of expertise on one or more project teams leading the extended characterization of complex biologic therapeutics. 
  • Develop implement and execute novel analytical methods and techniques using  
  • Proactively seek out new information in the literature and incorporate this into individual projects as well as the overall program. 
  • Work in partnership with colleagues from Discovery Process Chemistry/Engineering and Formulation Development departments among others. 

Qualifications :

  • Ph.D degree in Biochemistry Analytical Chemistry Pharmaceutical Sciences or a closely related discipline.  
  • Qualification for Senior Scientist I: 04 years of experience is required with relevant experience. 
  • Qualification for Senior Scientist II: 4 years of experience is required with relevant experience. 
  • Practical experience and strong knowledge in one or more of the following areas: protein/oligonucleotide HPLC capillary electrophoresis SPR AF4 MALS ELISA and/or mass spectrometry. 
  • Previous experience having maintained a laboratory notebook in compliance with Good Laboratory/Manufacturing Practices. 
  • Demonstrated record of independent thought creativity and scientific accomplishment (e.g. peer reviewed journal publications patents). 
  • Must possess a solid understanding of protein/oligonucleotide chemistry and biochemistry particularly as related to biologics drug development. 
  • Strong data and time organization/management skills coupled with strong interpersonal and effective communication skills for facilitating collaborations with a demonstrated ability to lead cross functional process development teams. 
  • Effective writer and communication of research or other regulatory materials. 
  • Experience with the analysis of RNA lipids and lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) is a plus. 

Leveling will be commensurate to experience.

  • This is an onsite opportunity based out of AbbVies Northern Chicago office. 
  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
  • We offer a comprehensive package of benefits including paid time off (vacation holidays sick) medical/dental/vision insurance and 401(k) to eligible employees.
  • This job is eligible to participate in our shortterm incentive programs.
