What is the NGG Program

The Nursing Graduate Guarantee (NGG) is a program funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care. This program is designed to support newly graduated RNs and RPNs as well as Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) who are within twelve 12 months of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).

The intent of the NGG program is to:

  • Provide support to new nurses in Ontario as they transition into practice;

  • Improve the integration of new nurses into the workforce;

  • Promote the availability of fulltime employment or the equivalent of fulltime hours for new nurses; and

  • Promote health workforce planning at the organizational level.

Applying to the CHEO NGG posting does not guarantee an applicant will be awarded an NGG position. The NGG program is funded by the Ministry of Health with a limited number of funded positions. As a result the program is highly competitive and not all applicants will receive a position. Additionally there is no guarantee of placement in a preferred unit.

COMPENSATION

RPN $30.41 per hour

RN $39.07 per hour

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

As a new graduate transitioning into practice during the 12week orientation and training program incumbents will receive invaluable coaching feedback and mentorship in a clinical setting while performing in the scope of the RN role and supporting patient care.

COMMITMENT

  • These positions will work in a fixed term contract of 1.0 FTE Temporary FullTime for a 12week period.

  • The new graduate will commit to accepting fulltime employment or the equivalent of fulltime hours with their NGG employer (CHEO) for a minimum of six 6 months after completing the NGG program transition into practice period.

  • Hiring periods for NGG occur between May and November 2025 as this is when the NGG portal is open through the Ministry of Health.

QUALIFICATIONS

This post is for Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN)s who are within twelve 12 months of registering with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and who have not previously worked as a nurse in Ontario.We are seeking Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) who have:

  • Completed their nursing education outside of Canada

  • Matched with an employer on the NGG online portal within twelve 12 months of registering with the CNO

  • Not been employed as a nurse in Ontario in the six 6 months prior to participating in the NGG program

AND

  • Commit to accepting fulltime employment or the equivalent of fulltime hours with their NGG employer (CHEO) for a minimum of six 6 months after completing the NGG program transition into practice period.

  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) (Essential)

  • Pediatric experience as a health professional (Preferred)

  • Recent experience working in the Canadian healthcare system i.e. HCA PSW Preferred

  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills in English (Essential)

  • Familycentered approach (Essential)

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (Essential)

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to understand interpret and carry out written and verbal instructions (Essential)

  • Effective communication skills to provide ongoing support and care for diverse patients and communicate any concerns changes in the patients condition(Essential)

  • Ability to respond to physical demands (e.g. heavy lifts and transfers run to codes do restraints) (Essential)

  • Basic knowledge of performing vital signs sterility and aseptic technique and established InfectionControl and Occupational Health and Safety practices(Essential)

  • Shifts include evening weekend overnights and holiday work (Essential)

  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3 remain compliant Essential)

  • Bilingual (English/ French) (Preferred)

HOW TO APPLY

To get started eligible nurses must first apply directly to this posting through the CHEO portal. Once the NGG online portal opens (usually during the last week of April or first week of May) you will need to register as a Nursing User on the NGG portal .

New nursing graduates may not yet have their CNO registration and as such will not be able to complete the registration process on the NGG portal until a CNO registration is received. Given this we invite all new nursing graduates in this scenario to apply for a job posting at CHEO so long as you anticipate receiving your CNO registration by November 15 2025. If an offer is presented you must formally register on the NGG portal (pending receipt of CNO registration) and apply to a specific NGG job posting to finalize the recruitment process.

*Please note Registered Nurses (RN) will be represented by the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA).

*Please note Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) will be represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU). This position will be based out of Ottawa. Please note that location may be subject to change at any time at the discretion of the employer.

Effective March 29 2021 CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive prescreening and evaluation process. This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test practical exam or other assessment. All candidates who meet the essential and preferred qualifications may be tested.

Bilingualism (French/English) will be validated by a language proficiency assessment conducted by a third party provider. Candidates will be required to meet the minimum linguistic profile prior to the date of hire.
