Duties and Responsibilities
- *Under the direction of the College of Social Sciences (CSS) Advising Civic and Community Engagement in the Social Sciences (ACCESS) Director coordinates collegewide programs geared towards student experience. Provides academicrelated services to current and incoming CSS students with a focus on transfer students.
- *Maintains knowledge of transfer and articulation agreements and other transfer regulations to ensure a smooth transition for transfer students.
- *Provides general orientation information initial advising and registration assistance to incoming transfer students to ensure a smooth transition process.
- *Contributes to the development of websites publications and other resources for transfer students.
- *Engages with prospective transfer students to provide information on course choices at their home institution and prematriculation advising at CSS at UH community colleges West Valley College Palau Community College and on the web.
- *Liaises with UH system campuses West Valley College Palau Community College and other feeder institutions. Partner with Aloha Pathways Admissionsand the Office of the Registrar in transfer student outreach and communication.
- *Serves as an information resource to students faculty and staff by maintaining knowledge of UHM and CSS transfer articulation agreements and other transfer requirements and regulations. Provides appropriate training and information for academic advisors across campus and at sending institutions.
- *Collaborates with the Kaieie Program and other degree pathway programs to develop maintain and administer orientation opportunities for transfer students.
- *Monitors transfer students credit accumulation progression towards degree and identify specific interventions and outreach to promote transfer progression and graduation.
- *Monitors and evaluates transfer student enrollment registration preorientation advising and semester advising. Reports transfer student major change migration patterns and gathers and disseminates data on transfer student retention and credit accumulation. Resolves and follows up on registration related problems concerns and/or discrepancies.
- *Reviews requests for course overloads waiver of course prerequisites special admission and evaluating registration procedures and instructions.
- *Conducts group and individual academic information sessions for CSS undergraduate majors and prospective majors.
- *Reviews applications and provides information to CSS students requesting readmission to the university after probation suspension and/or dismissal and takes appropriate actions.
- *Audits monitors and evaluates enrollment individual student academic progress and the impact on degree seeking goals including evaluation/accuracy of transfer credits progress checks graduation checks and appropriate institutional actions. Updates academic records for CSS students; provides reports of graduation and academic actions as needed.
- *Participates in orientation for new CSS students.
- *Establishes and maintains regular communication with CSS majors via email and other means to facilitate access to research scholarships internships employment and other opportunities for students.
- *Apprises CSS students of the academic petition procedures and deadlines. Resolves CSS students academic petitions in a timely manner.
- *Serves as a liaison to the various internal/external agencies (Admission/Records Registrars Cashiers Academic departments etc. to resolve and/or assist in resolving any student issues concerns or problems.
- *Performs exit interviews for each graduate and compiles interview data each semester and recommends program improvements to the ACCESS Director.
- *Contributes to the development of CSS advising protocols and program advancements as part of the ACCESS advising team.
- *Keeps abreast with UH curriculum changes and academic information important to CSS undergraduate students. Participates in oncampus trainings and informational sessions concerning changes in GenEd or CSS degree requirements.
- *Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of respect for and development of skills to engage with those of varied backgrounds and learning differences.
- *Leads and manages work priorities projects and employee relations of subordinates
- *Represents CSS and attends academicrelated events activities and meetings which may involve work outside of normal business hours including evenings weekends and/or holidays as needed and travel to offcampus locations including interisland.
- Contributes to development of websites publications and printed program information documents for degree requirements academic opportunities student recruiting and monitoring of student progress.
- Participates in the coordination of CSS Signature Event Team with organizing Collegewide events and activities (e.g. Week of Welcome Welina Manoa Discover Manoa Aloha Reception Parent/Student Welcome events and activities collegespecific graduation events) in collaboration with staff volunteers and relevant offices. Contributions may include assisting with events planning implementation evaluation reporting and recordkeeping as well as negotiation of events space food/beverages audiovisual equipment and ensuring appropriate hospitality decor and signage to produce high quality CSS events/activities.
- Analyzes and evaluates college events for effectiveness and makes recommendations and adjustments as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Social Sciences Arts and Sciences Education Humanities Business Administration or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for higher education academic advising; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
- Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the field of academic advising or student academic services as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.
- Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with academic advising or student academic services.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
- If applicable for supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize workload to meet scheduled deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fastpaced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Drivers license (Class 3 comparable drivers license or other means of transportation which meets position needs.
Desirable Qualifications
- Knowledge of CSS undergraduate programs curricula and/or procedures and policies especially as they relate to academic advising.
- Knowledge of creation development and implementation of collegelevel academic programs.
- Experience in utilizing STAR and Banner to assess student progress toward graduation.
- Experience in academic advising at University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) and knowledge of UHM policies and procedures as it relates to academic advising.
- Experience working with students of varied backgrounds.
- Experience in academic advising in social sciences.
