Built in 1835 by Nova Scotian author and judge Thomas Chandler Haliburton and his wife Louisa the propertys sixteen owners and tenants left their mark inside and out. Clifton evolved from the Old English words clif (cliff or bank) and tun (town settlement farmstead) meaning a town near the cliff. Situated in Windsor along the banks of the Avon River Louisa believed it was the perfect place to name after her hometown of Clifton England.
Now part of the Nova Scotia Museum the countrys largest decentralized museum Clifton Museum Park explores how its evolving ownership architecture and rolesincluding its past as a gypsum minereveal the stark contrasts between owners tenants and workers. Haliburtons inherited judgeship further underscores wealths role in access to justice.
Clifton Museum Park is excited to announce an opening for a Heritage Program Assistant. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a team dedicated to preserving and sharing Nova Scotias rich cultural and natural history.
In this role you will be responsible for diverse tasks that help keep our museum operating smoothly and ensure visitors have an exceptional experience. Your daily duties include assisting with opening and closing procedures cleaning and preparing the museum for guests. You will greet visitors answer questions and manage admissions while providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Additionally you will process retail sales record visitor statistics and conduct tours both indoors and outdoors.
You have a key role delivering school and group programs contributing to the success of special events and participating in annual artifact inventory and collections care projects. Another key aspect of this position is collaborating with the Heritage Interpreter team to create engaging social media and web content that promotes the museum and its fascinating history.
We seek a high school university college student or recent graduate interested in pursuing a career in the general arts history museum studies theatre archaeology anthropology library studies communications or a related field. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about museums and is passionate about Nova Scotias cultural and natural history.
You are detail oriented selfmotivated and can work independently and as part of a team. You possess strong interpersonal skills as this role requires engaging with a diverse range of visitors and ensuring they feel valued. You are developing public speaking skills and your passion for heritage and history will be evident in every interaction.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Word Excel Outlook and Teams is required. Additionally you should be developing your ability to organize tasks efficiently and communicate effectively both in writing and verbally. Experience with social media platforms is an asset as is any training or experience in tourism hospitality or museum studies. Certification in First Aid and WHMIS are also assets.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication organizational and interpersonal skills specifically the ability to develop positive interactions with visitors and provide visitor service to a high standard. Familiarity with computers including email Internet Microsoft Word Excel is required. The candidate must be selfmotivated able to work with limited supervision and able to work as part of a team. Previous experience in public speaking is an asset. Previous experience in heritage interpretation hospitality and tourism recreational/educational programming or working with children are assets. Fluency in English is required.
Physical requirements include standing walking climbing stairs crouching and moving around for extended periods exposure to dust heat and the use of common cleaning fluids.
Work Location: Clifton Museum Park 424 Clifton Avenue Windsor Nova Scotia. Please be aware that Clifton Museum Park is not fully accessible.
The work schedule requires flexibility including weekends holidays and the occasional evening. This position offers 35 hours per week at $18 per hour.
