Job Summary
The Department of City & Metropolitan Planning CMP within the University of Utahs College of Architecture Planning invites applications for a twoyear Postdoctoral research and teaching position. This position will begin on July 1 2024 and run through June 30 2026. The position is a 9month appointment at 1.0 FTE . The successful candidate will participate in multiple grantfunded projects on disaster planning and management under the direct supervision of Dr. Divya Chandrasekhar. Experience in disaster studies and a strong quantitative analysis background are required. The successful candidate will also teach two courses per year in the Masters and undergraduate programs of the Department of City & Metropolitan Planning. Candidates with experience or interest in teaching planning analysis methods and GIS are preferred. Opportunities will be available for the successful candidate to pursue their research collaborate on grant writing publishing mentor student researchers and engage with a renowned interdisciplinary hazards research community through the NSF funded WIRED Global Center (an interdisciplinary research center on energy and climate resilience) and the C CIES (an interdisciplinary research center focused on improving earthquake awareness and resilience). The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to engage with multiple local state and national agencies in the field of disaster planning through existing and upcoming collaborative research grants. This is an exceptional opportunity for a candidate to network with a wide range of interdisciplinary scholars and practitioners and to develop a highly collaborative research program that can launch their independent career. The Departments BA/BS undergraduate degree in Urban Ecology focuses on exploring the interrelationships among social environmental and economic systems aiming to enhance the vitality and sustainability of places and communities. The Urban Ecology degree is also taught at the Utah Asia Campus in Songdo South Korea. The Master of City and Metropolitan Planning MCMP is an accredited professional degree emphasizing ecological resiliency smart growth and social justice through effective communication collaboration and innovation. The Ph.D. in Metropolitan Planning Policy and Design is a researchfocused program. The department also offers a Master of Real Estate Development (with School of Business) and Graduate Certificates in Urban Design Community Engaged Practices and Real Estate Development. Job Responsibilities: Conduct research in collaboration with Dr. Divya Chandrasekhar. Engage in quantitative analysis of existing datasets on disaster planning and recovery collected as part of grantfunded collaborative projects on disaster relocation and nonprofit recovery capacity and small business mitigation and recovery ; Assist in writing and publishing of research results; Provide grantwriting support for interdisciplinary proposals to nationallevel funding organizations; Teach two courses per academic year in the Masters and undergraduate programs of the Department of City & Metropolitan Planning preferably within the topics of planning analysis methods and GIS . Participate in faculty governance at the department college and university levels. Opportunities for Career Development: A chance to build your research agenda publish in peerreviewed journals and expand your professional network; Grantwriting experience with different types and levels of funding agencies; Frontseat exposure to managing grant projects with big budgets and large teams; Mentorship from a highly supportive collaborative and friendly faculty community; Engagement with a highly diverse and interdisciplinary research community in the field of hazards research and disaster planning; Critical teaching experience in a wellregarded urban planning program; and Experience with undergraduate and graduate student mentorship and advising if desired.
