Assistant Professor (TenureTrack) in Landscape Architecture
The School of Architecture at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa) seeks a dynamic and accomplished faculty member in landscape architecture with expertise in designing ecologically and socially sustainable resilient healthy places and communities. Position duties include teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels; research professional practice and/or creative work; and service. The school seeks candidates who can demonstrate current advanced scholarship and design inquiry that exhibits an indepth understanding of the landscape architecture discipline as well as strong teaching abilities and demonstrated effectiveness in studio instruction. This appointment will begin in Fall 2025 and will be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The School of Architecture offers a preprofessional Bachelor of Environmental Design (BEnvD) degree an LAABaccredited Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) degree a Master of Architecture (MArch) degree and a NAABaccredited Doctor of Architecture (DArch) degree. The school is recognized for its social and environmental design research in AsiaPacific Hawaii and tropical environments which provides instructive models for complex global problems. The school and university embrace a collaborative integrated approach to improving built environments with a strong commitment to design excellence sustainability and applied research. The school houses the University of Hawaii Community Design Center and the Environmental Research and Design Lab (ERDL) both of which provide opportunities for innovative faculty design research.
Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) Program
The MLA program at UH Manoa prepares its graduates to become leaders of the next generation of landscape architects. Trained in the extraordinary Hawaiian landscape students are equipped with emerging tools and strategies needed to enhance a beautiful resilient and healthy built environment. As the only professional landscape architecture program in Hawaii situated within a Carnegie R1 Land Sea and Space Grant university the MLA advances contemporary urban landscape design teaching theory and practice in the state and tropical AsiaPacific coastal regions with a dedicated focus on ecological and social sustainability by design.
Its emphasis on contemporary sustainable urban/landscape planning and design in tropical AsiaPacific regions distinguishes this MLA from other North American landscape architecture programs. Hawaii with its rich natural and cultural history and manifold environmental and social challenges provides a unique place of learning and opportunity for cuttingedge landscape architectural research teaching and practice. There is no other place in the United States where the aspirations of twentyfirst century landscape architectural practice converge so seamlessly with the philosophy and biocultural practicesof the local indigenous community.
Duties and Responsibilities
This fulltime 9month faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor includes responsibilities for teaching research creative work and service. The School of Architectureseeks candidates who can help advance and strengthen the curriculum and focus of its MLA degree and contribute to the delivery of the BEnvD MArch and DArch programs. Within the required specialization in landscape architecture desired expertise includes but is not limited to design research and practice at the intersection of landscape architecture and digital technology and/or design for healthy livable and resilient communities. The school seeks candidates who are versatile strong design educators that will complement the skills of the faculty at the School of Architecture.
Minimum Qualifications- Candidates must have a minimum of a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) degree.
- Additionally before application for tenure documentation of a professional license to practice landscape architecture (or architecture) is required of candidates who do not hold a PhD.
- Applicants must demonstrateexcellent design communication and collaboration skills;
- A strong record of demonstrated teaching effectiveness;
- The ability to maintain a vigorous program of research and/or creative work and potential to advance the discipline.
Desirable Qualifications
The school especially welcomes candidates with:- Additional professional/postprofessional degree(s) or a PhD in landscape architecture/urban design/architecture or a related field.
- An established body of peerreviewed built and/or creative work or scholarship in multiple areas relevant to landscape architecture and/or the design of healthy resilient communities.
- Fluency in disciplinerelevant digital technology e.g. generative design/AI emerginganimation/modeling and/or digital fabrication/prototyping.
- Professional practice experience that translates to strengthening the outcomes for design implementation courses in the areas of site detailing and integration of construction technologies.
- Aptitude for administrative academic service and/or experience with LAAB accreditation and curriculum development.
- Experience working with individuals and groups of culturally diverse backgrounds and/or demonstrated interest in indigenous perspectives.
