Description of Work:

This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical and electromechanical systems of dredge crane barge and tugboats operated by the Division of Ferries. Work involves participating in and supervising the installation maintenance and repair of AC and DC generators switchboards distribution panels lighting and alarm circuits.
Maintenance and repairs are performed without technical supervision; however complex electrical repair problems may be performed under the general supervision of a maintenance supervisor and are reviewed and evaluated through the continued and reliable operation of all electrical systems and their ability to meet U. S. Coast Guard requirements. This position also assists other entities in the Ferry Division at different locations and may require overnight travel. Performs all other related duties as required by the Supervisor.
Duties include but not limited to:
- Trouble shoots electrical equipment and circuits using appropriate test equipment to detect and effect required maintenance repairs or replacement requirements.
- Performs maintenance and repair of generators switchboards controllers circuit breakers electrical motors distribution panels alarm and lighting circuits. Conducts insulation resistance measurements of electrical cables to determine condition and effects repairs or replacements as required.
- Installation and/or alteration to electrical systems aboard ferries and dredges.
- Maintains adequate inventories of electrical spare parts and requisitions replacements as required.
- Maintains electrical system maintenance histories notating date and extent of repairs and/or alterations.
- Assists the marine engineer in the preparation and inspection of electrical repairs performed by outside contractors and during annual shipyard overhaul.
- Performs related duties as required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT and Ferry Divisions drug and FitFor Duty tests.
Employee must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle.
The position works Monday through Friday 8 hour days. Some travel and overnight stay will be required depending on the location of the vessel.
This position will work out of the Cherry Branch Maintenance Facility
Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
- Knowledge of marine electrical systems and required maintenance and repair needs.
- Knowledge of the principles techniques and practices involved in the installation maintenance repair and alteration of marine electrical and electromechanical systems.
- Skill in the detection diagnoses maintenance and repair of marine electrical systems.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing complex marine electrical systems problems.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience in marine electrical and electromechanical systems maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
