Job Description

Under direct supervision assists the marine engineer in the operation maintenance and repair of motor ferry operation auxiliary and related equipment at the Staten Island Ferry; performs related work.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS: JOB DESCRIPTION:
Reports directly to the Yard Crew Supervisor or in his/her absence the Yard Crew Marine Engineer or Deputy Director of Ferry Maintenance; responsible for performing maintenance and repair aboard vessels and vessel rounds and inspections.


EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS:
The Yard Crew performs maintenance and repair of all types of machinery and systems onboard non-operational vessels. The Yard Crew assists with the preparation for and performance of USCG inspections of non-operational vessels. The Yard Crew performs security rounds on non-operational vessels. The Yard Crew also serves as engine crew for shakedowns and other vessel operations and will perform machinery rounds and inspections Engine Room housekeeping and other duties in accordance with management system requirements when assigned.


MEDICAL/DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENTS: Medical guidelines established by the U.S. Coast Guard apply to the position of Marine Oiler. Candidates will therefore be required to undergo a medical examination prior to appointment and thereafter pursuant to Coast Guard regulations. Candidates must also pass a drug screening to be appointed. Marine Oilers are subject to random drug and alcohol testing during their employment.

MMC REQUIREMENT: Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with endorsement and medical certificate must be maintained for the duration of employment.

TWIC REQUIREMENT: At the time of appointment candidates must possess a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA). A valid TWIC must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Qualifications :

1. Possession of a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) with endorsement as a Designated Duty Engineer (DDE) of motor vessels of any horsepower or Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) with the following ratings: any rating Junior Engineer Oiler or Fireman/Watertender; or

2. Possession of a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) with endorsement for Third Assistant Engineer or higher of motor vessels of any horsepower.
