Job Description

The University of Saint Mary is a Roman Catholic liberal arts university located in Leavenworth Kansas just 25 minutes away from Kansas City. For over 100 years the University of Saint Mary has helped students find their way to meaningful lives and careers through an education that blends the liberal arts and a focus on critical thinking with the development of key professional skills. USM serves about 1400 students at its main campus in Leavenworth its satellite location in Overland Park as well as online.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Graduate Assistant (GA) for Student Engagement in the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at USM reporting to the Division Chair. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and executing activities for students that create a sense of enthusiasm and connection to science and mathematics as part of the Divisions community. In addition the GA will assist with social media communications alumni outreach student recruitment and retention and other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Student event planning at a frequency of approximately once per month. This will range from informal events (Donuts with the Division) to a conference (Science and Mathematics Undergraduate Research Forum).
  • Social media communications for the Division using Facebook Twitter Instagram etc.
  • Assist with generation of newsletters to alumni and other community stakeholders.
  • Assisting faculty with divisional events including STEM week Pi Day annual High School Event annual Science and Mathematics Undergraduate Research Forum.
  • Some infrequent weekend responsibilities including student engagement at sporting events Division community events new student registration days and recruiting opportunities.
  • Assisting lab coordinators with the ordering of lab supplies lab set up and clean up.
  • Perform additional job related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors degree. A degree in a science or mathematics field is preferred but not required.
  • Must meet eligibility for USM Graduate Assistantship program which includes acceptance into one of the USM graduate programs.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Must be selfstarter able to work with minimal direction / supervision and should possess and demonstrate initiative.
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must possess and demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Must possess and demonstrate strong work ethic.
  • Past experience in event planning is a plus.
  • Past social media experience is preferred.
  • Must be able to successfully pass required background screening as appropriate.
  • Affinity with the overall mission of the University of Saint Mary.
