The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) seeks applicants for an Assistant Research Professor in Applied Mathematics focused on waves in fluids. The main goals of research are in the mathematical modeling and theory of water waves as well as scientific computing. This oneyear research position is housed in the Department of Mathematical Sciences within the research projects of Prof. Andr Nachbin. One project concerns water waves on graphs as in branching channels and another concerns waveparticle systems in connection with a bouncing droplet and its hydrodynamic pilotwave.
The successful candidate is expected to have experience in the potential theory for water waves or other water wave models. Familiarity with reduced (asymptotic) modeling is welcome. Experience with numerically solving partial differential equations is a plus.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences has an extensive research program in areas which include Analysis Financial Technology and Operations Research Fluid Dynamics Mechanics Mathematical Modeling and Computation in Life Sciences Mathematical/Quantitative Finance Mathematics of Materials Science Numerical Analysis Partial Differential Equations Probability Scientific Machine Learning and Stochastic Analysis.
