Job Description

Under the Project Management of BlueScope; Rio Tinto BHP and Woodside Energy have partnered together to develop Project NeoSmelt. Our intention is to develop Australias largest ironmaking Electric Smelting Furnace (ESF) pilot plant situated in Kwinana Industrial Area south of Perth.

About the Project

The groundbreaking project combines the expertise of the joint venture partners to test technology to enable the use of Pilbara iron ore to produce molten iron using direct reduced iron (DRI)ESF technology as the companies come together to try to accelerate the decarbonisation of steelmaking. Excitingly Project NeoSmelt has the potential to open a pathway to nearzero emissions steelmaking! With the added benefit of using Pilbara iron ore to ensure the longevity of the iron ore and steel industry while contributing to a decarbonised steel making process.

The pilot plant aims to prove Pilbara iron ore can be used to produce lowercarbon emissions molten iron and subject to funding we anticipate a decision to enter feasibility studies in Q2 2025 targeting final investment decision for the pilot plant in 2026 with operations expected to begin in 2028.

The Opportunity

Our project is looking for an Area Manager Electrical Smelting Furnace (ESF) and an Area Manager Direct Reduction Plant (DRP) to join our team based in Perth and Kwinana WA initially on a Fixed Term Contract. By embarking with us on this new journey youll work alongside our renown joint venture partners including BHP Rio Tinto and Woodside Energy united in our goal to achieve Net Zero Cabron emissions by 2050. You wont just be part of a project; youll be at the forefront of the next generation of low emissions steelmaking.  Enjoy coastal living just 20 minutes from the vibrant CBD of Perth plus weekend getaways to the stunning Margaret River wine region are just around the corner.

As part of the Project Feasibility Team reporting to the Project Manager you will provide managerial leadership for either the ESF or DRP. Working Collaboratively with cross functional leads you will oversee integrate and coordinate the design construction and project control functions to deliver the capital scope safely on time and within budget.

What Will You Do

You will lead your area in:

  • safety & environment leadership implement and maintain HSEC management plans ensuring compliance across the project
  • crossteam collaboration foster collaboration between engineering technology & process teams OEMs operations and commissioning readiness teams in contribution to the design process
  • project delivery & oversight management and delivery of the Area Scope including oversight of productivity levels quality assurance procedures and coordination processes for OEMs engineering vendors suppliers and iconstructors
  • planning & risk management identify risks and mitigation strategies contributing to the project risk register
  • procurement & contract management oversee tender processes bid evaluations and commercial/technical administration of contracts and manage the major OEM design contracts
  • construction & commissioning readiness ensure necessary resources and documentation for successful plant handover and operational readiness
  • planning support the Construction Lead Procurement Lead and Project Director in the development of the planning for the project

If the project achieves the financial investment decision in 2026 there is opportunity for this position to continue throughout the build and commissioning phases.

With your proven expertise in managing a major design and construction project in a heavy industrial environment you will bring:

  • tertiary qualification in Engineering with substantial experience in a relevant discipline.
  • experience in tendering contract negotiation and cost management.
  • ability to lead influence and drive project success through collaboration and strategic decisionmaking.
