Job Description

Position Summary: Teach American Red Cross swim lessons.

Qualifications Certifications and Experience:

Certifications Obtainable upon Employment

(Complete within 2 weeks of hire and prior to first scheduled shift; Cost of certification and time spent on the certification are covered by the employer)

  • Trainings required by the Johnston Community School District
  • Trainings required by Community Education

Experience

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard First Aid and CPRPR preferred
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor preferred

Performance Criteria

Professional

  • Teaching swimming techniques swimming strokes and water safety rules to students with varying swimming abilities.
  • Assisting more experienced swimmers to enhance their swimming abilities.
  • Assessing the progress of students and adjusting teaching programs accordingly.
  • Monitoring students to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Implementing ground rules for each swim session.
  • Planning swimming lessons that take into account students abilities and progressive development.
  • Identifying incorrect swimming techniques and correcting students accordingly.
  • Keeping work area clean and prepared for class.
  • Attend all assigned meetings and inservices
  • Perform other such duties and function as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position

  • Control their setting as needed to ensure quality program implementation.
  • Focus on their environment anticipating and understanding protocol in regards to safety of participants.
  • Provide instruction/leadership/management of program implementation related to specific job responsibilities.
  • Perform light to moderate manual labor to assist with implementation of program.
  • Demonstrate ability to grasp and adjust to new and changing situations.

General

  • Work location will be assigned as needed.
  • Work days/hours may vary depending upon program needs.
  • Primary location is Johnston Community School District facilities and programspecific.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
