Texas Tech University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Education.

Strategic Plan

The Universitys strategic plan A Foundation for the Next Century A Pathway to 2025 charts a course for Texas Tech to continue to expand its national and international prominence focusing on three strategic priorities:

  • Enable innovative research and creative activities
  • Transform lives and communities through strategic outreach and engaged scholarship

The voters of Texas approved the establishment of the Texas University Fund (TUF). Texas Tech University will receive $44 million from the TUF for the fiscal year 2024 earmarked to enhance

and support the universitys research endeavors. The funds are anticipated to benefit future generations of students and faculty fostering innovation technology and overall academic advancement.

The College of Education

The College of Education with over 2000 students offers a nationally recognized undergraduate teacher preparation program and 21 graduate degrees that prepare students for professional or academic positions in education. The College places a focus on strategic outreach and engaged scholarship and collaborates with local regional state national and global partners to address complex problems facing individuals and communities. In recognition of its extraordinary community outreach efforts the college received a 2018 W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Award from the Association of Public and Landgrant Universities (APLU).

The College of Education is further distinguished by several notable accomplishments and recognitions. It is home to one of Texas Techs highest award holders the Horn Professorship and boasts prestigious positions such as the Helen Devitt Jones Chair in Education and the Helen Devitt Jones Professorship in Professional Education. Additionally the College is proud to house the Jere Lynn Burkhart Chair in Autism a testament to its leadership in specialized fields. The institution is one of only 16 universities in the nation to offer an Orientation and Mobility Program further highlighting its commitment to accessible education. The College also holds the distinction of having the largest childrens literature collection in the Southwest with 6000 volumes including a complete Caldecott collection.

The Dean of the College of Education oversees four departments:

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Language Diversity and Literacy Studies
  • Curriculum Studies and Teacher Education

  • Higher Education
  • Educational Leadership

In addition there are six research centers and institutes in the College:

  • The Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research
  • The Virginia Murray Sowell Center for Research and Education in Sensory Disabilities
  • The Center for Advocacy in Teacher for Youth and Schools with Technology (CATALYST)
  • The Center for Innovative Research in Change Leadership and Education (CIRCLE)
  • The UniversitySchool Partnership for the Renewal of Educator Preparation (US PREP) National Center
  • The Center for Innovation in ELearning (CIEL).

The Dean

The Dean reports to the Provost and works closely with the President and other senior officers to implement the University Strategic Plan. Specific responsibilities of the Dean include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing the colleges strategic plan
  • Advising the Office of the Provost on teacher certification requirements for the State of Texas
  • Managing national and regional accreditation processes
  • Providing leadership and innovation in teaching research and service including fostering relationships with the community and with state and national educational agencies
  • Effectively representing the College in the broader university community alumni relations fund raising and in state federal and private sector academic and research issues
  • Managing graduate and undergraduate enrollment
  • Effectively managing the colleges human financial and physical resources
  • Leading the College in a manner that supports the Universitys R1 status while articulating in a supportive way the expectations this development brings for faculty and their scholarship
  • Being an advocate for every academic program in the college

Required qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in education or closely related discipline.
  • A record of experience and scholarly accomplishments that merit an appointment as a tenured full professor at TTU in one of the Colleges departments.
  • Background or experience to represent various fields of study in the College and its mission.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic planning and a shared vision through open dialogue and transparency
  • Experience with shared governance and seeking input from the Colleges faculty and staff in academic and resources decisions
  • Demonstrated experience in successful enrollment management and growth
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to articulate and promote the mission of the College to internal and external constituents
  • Substantial administrative experience in fiscal and personnel management in higher education
  • Previous successful fundraising record and a willingness to engage in development activities
  • Experience in obtaining and administering local regional state or federal grants
  • A demonstrated entrepreneurial and innovative record of supporting academic and research initiatives
  • Evidence of supporting inperson blended distance and online learning environments
  • A demonstrated record of supporting faculty and staff in their professional careers
  • Experience building partnerships with campus state federal and private entities and the educational community
  • Proven record of advocacy for community economic development programs community outreach or engaged scholarship.
