The resource specialist is an integral part of the psychiatry service at MGH whose role is to enhance delivery of services and quality of care for patients. The position requires a high degree of flexibility independence and willingness to participate in multiple activities in providing support to both patients and caregivers. The position requires strong communication skills and the ability to converse comfortably with patients and their caregivers as well as clinical and administrative staff. The resource specialist will facilitate teambased care including acting as a liaison for patients between mental health and other providers and obtaining collateral information.
The responsibilities of this position will be split between two worksites: the Acute Psychiatry Service and Child Outpatient Psychiatry.
The resource specialist will work collaboratively with clinical social workers and department staff to support patients this may include but is not limited to:
- Assist department staff by contacting identified patients with appointment reminders or to reschedule a missed visit.
- Facilitate the process of refill requests and prior authorizations for medications. Write letters to support patient needs and care.
- Collaborate with recovery resource specialists in psychiatry the Intensive Care Management Program (iCMP) and the Department of Social Services to maintain and update a database of resources for patients.
- Identify and refer patients to community services such as bereavement support groups childcare educational employment support services and resources that support patients and their families
- Facilitate and provide information and assistance for transportation services such as the RIDE PT1 for Mass Health the TAP pass discounted taxi vouchers and town or service based transportation options as needed
- Provide referral and information for programs such as meals on wheels elder services day programs club house employment programs peer support volunteer opportunities and recovery oriented services
- Assess patient/family understanding of mental health issues and resources. Provide educational materials to patients and families on illnesses and treatments community resources support groups and research studies.
Acute Psychiatry Service
- Work collaboratively with clinicians in the Acute Psychiatry Service to assist with patients discharge from the emergency setting to other psychiatric or medical settings.
- Collaborates and consults with patient families professionals and providers inside and outside the Hospital to develop and implement preadmission inpatient post hospital and outpatient care.
- Check in with patients and families during their ED stay to provide updates on treatment plan status and answer questions.
- Makes referrals to partial hospital programs or other alternate levels of care by providing clinical information and documentation to support patients transfer to other facilities. This may include preparing information to fax copying portions of the medical record and scheduling intake appointments for patients. It will also include arranging outpatient followup appointments for patients being discharged which may include obtaining new psychiatry and therapy appointments and obtaining new PCP or medical /surgical appointments.
- Refers to and collaborates with interdepartmental specialists and programs outside agencies facilities payers and other relevant community resources.
- Assists with administrative duties and data entry including timely and accurate reporting of Boston Emergency Service Team (BEST) activities via the BEST database and updating staff and patient resources
Research resources and programs for patients including but not limited to:
- Medication resources and discount programs; legal financial and insurance resources
- Entitlements such as discounted cell phones fuel assistance discounted heat and electric and internet services transitional assistance child care vouchers and nutrition assistance benefits.
- Disabled and elder housing assistance and programs
- Referrals to mental health services and for clinical services in the community such as visiting nurse agencies community support programs and PCA.
Perform other duties to support clinical care of patients as needed.
Attend and participate in interdisciplinary meetings and staff meetings as needed.
Provide coverage for the clinical social worker and other psychiatry staff other as appropriate.

Bachelors degree required; Bachelors of Social Work or comparable training highly desirable
At least 23 years of work experience in the mental health care field preferred
