About WSDOT

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building maintaining and operating the state highway system WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation manages the worlds longest floating bridge and recently completed the worlds widest tunneling project.


The Washington State Ferry (WSF) system is a crucial part of Washingtons transportation network connecting communities across Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. With over 400 daily sailings on 10 routes it serves nearly 17 million passengers annually. WSF employs more than 1800 people who work on vessels at terminals in maintenance and at its Seattle headquarters.


The Opportunity


WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer Intern Mechanical to support the WSF Terminal Engineering Mechanical/Electrical Engineers in completing ferry terminal inspections. Work includes inspecting mechanical and electrical systems in the field compiling the associated condition reports documenting terminal hydraulic and cable system deficiencies and designing repairs. This position will assist in the field by recording the condition with mechanical and electrical engineers and help to compile the report. While in the field you will work alongside both engineers and craftspersons who maintain the bridges in operating condition. This type of inspection helps to create a dialogue between maintenance and engineering about problems that impact the bridges operation.


Additional work will include assisting in the investigation and looking through asbuilt records for design solutions for what is found during the inspections. You will also be involved in using various software programs used to analyze the data gathered in the field.


What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role you/the Transportation Engineer Intern Mechanical will:

  • Assist in the preparation of condition assessment reports.
  • Research mechanical design and develop repair solutions.
  • Assist in mechanical/electrical inspections.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:

  • Two years completed coursework in a College/University in Mechanical Engineering curriculum.
    1. Mechanical Engineering fields fluid hydraulics machine design material 3D modeling.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply basic mathematics to daily tasks.
  • Knowledge of basic engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of computer programs used in an engineering office.
  • Ability to read shop drawings contract plans and specifications.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Construction/Engineering Work Experience.
  • Completion of three years of study in a College/University Mechanical Engineering curriculum.
  • Experience with either mechanical or electrical industrial equipment.
