For over 25 years IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. 9 out of 9 times in the last decade IJMs Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50 and 85 for very large populations of people in poverty. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people from violence we are seeking a Manager Internal Communications.
The Manager Internal Communications is charged with developing strategy message frameworks standards and innovative approaches to inspire and equip IJMs nearly 1400 employees across the globe to engage with IJMs mission vision values strategy and each other with wholehearted excellence.
The role serves as an advisor to the organization to provide employees with uptodate and compelling details about enterprisewide and largescale initiatives programs and successes with particular emphasis on enabling all employees to experience the connection between their own work and the measurable justice system transformation being achieved across the globe through rescue and protection. Partnering with the VP of Marketing and Communications this person will help develop an internal brand that excites impacts and engages employees.
As a key communication coach to the Global Leadership Team this role is responsible for providing guidance on leadership and manager communications connecting employees across the organization with regional and global leadership. This includes responsibility for enterprisewide leader culture communication vehicles such as the quarterly All Hands meeting and live Q&As (such as Conversations with the CEO and other engagement with the Global Leadership Team).
This role will offer guidance and forge collaboration with regional and global communicators fostering a community of shared practice through a rhythm of regular gatherings.
Leveraging digital tools this leader will curate deploy and continually assess the effectiveness of new opportunities for strategic use in digital communications. This leader will also serve as a key partner with change management leaders to finalize messaging at the highest level as relates to organizational change management communications.
This position is based in the Washington DC area and is available to be hybrid (onsite Tuesdays & Thursdays). It reports to the Global Director Employee Experience and is only available for candidates with the right to work in the US.
The success of this role is measured by the following KRAs:
Internal Communication Vision and Strategy: Development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy aligned with IJMs goals vision and values. Ensure that messaging is consistent clear and engaging consistently measuring and adjusting communication plans based on feedback and organizational needs and requirements. The strategy must foster a culture of openness transparency belonging and trust within the organization.
Content Creation and Management: Oversee the creation and distribution of internal communication standards frameworks and materials ensuring the content is relevant timely and in support of advancing internal employee culture engagement and access to information. Maintain an archive of internal communications for easy access and reference. Organize and oversee channels for crossfunctional collaboration and information sharing.
Crisis and Change Communication: Lead internal communications during times of crisis or organizational change to ensure clear empathetic and consistent messaging. Prepare and implement plans to manage both routine and emergency situations (including natural disasters political upheaval and organizational restructuring).
Stakeholder Engagement and Feedback: Act as a liaison between leadership and staff ensuring that employees are wellinformed about key initiatives policy changes and mission performance. Implement feedback mechanisms to assess employee sentiment and improve IJMs communication practices. Regularly report on employee feedback and communication effectiveness to CPO.
Technology Training and Development: Provide training and support to managers and team leaders to enhance internal communication skills across the organization. Create resources and materials to help staff understand and effectively engage with internal communication tools and platforms. Oversee the effective use of communication platforms to facilitate information flow.
Measurement and Reporting: Establish metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of internal communication initiatives.
Leadership and Management
Lead IJMs Internal Communications function including defining vision setting strategy and driving alignment with standards and objectives and overseeing effective across all internal communications.
Partner with region function and executive leaders to lead the development of internal communications vision and strategy to deliver IJMs messaging.
Provide leadership to the Internal Communications senior lead and serve as an advisor to those performing internal communication functions across the organization; develop community of practice with internal communicators throughout the Functions and Regions with regular rhythms of meeting establishing internal standards and cultivating shared knowledge and expertise.
Lead the Internal Communications teams ownership of enterprisewide employee communication events such as the All Hands and provide serve as principal messaging advisor on multiyear initiatives such as Orientation Week Global Mission Week and Diversity & Inclusion initiatives.
Advise highlevel messaging as relates to change management and crisis communications.
Advance communication technology initiatives to identify roll out and create internal employee engagement via digital communication and analytics tools.
Serve as an expert coach for leaders and managers to improve communication to teams as needed with particular attention to the quality and accuracy of information cascading across the organization.
Manage consultant and contractor relationships as needed.
Strategy & Knowledge Development & Implementation
Develop and oversee the of IJMs internal communications strategy to effectively promote employee engagement and connection with IJMs vision mission strategy culture and brand.
Be a strategic advisor to key partners (leaders functions regions) across the organization providing vision and strategy as relates to all aspects of internal and external messaging.
Advise on IJMs approach to change management and crisis communications coaching the messaging development for various change initiatives.
Own the global internal communications calendar scheduling communications to best support employee engagement and identifying appropriate channels for distribution.
Create communication strategies and content that support IJMs multicultural and geographically dispersed employees.
Policies and Procedures
Identify and oversee all internal communications procedures and policies ensuring they are clear streamlined and properly executed.
Ensure the Internal Communications function is aligned to industry best practices.
Communication
Develop key internal and executive organizational messages aligning with IJMs strategic priorities vision mission and values.
Ensure employee and executive communications follow a logical flow of information with appropriate notifications to leadership managers functions and employees.
Coordinate closely with regional and global marketing efforts to ensure consistency of message and appropriate timing.
Serve as principal messaging advisor to the team charged with concepting and developing IJM internal initiatives central to employee engagement and growth such as Orientation Week Global Mission Week and Diversity & Inclusion.
Advise and draft messages scripts and talking points for the CEO and Global Leadership Team for strategic internal enterprisewide and other highpriority communications.
Training and Development
Coach leaders and managers on executive internal communications as needed.
Develop training and tools to ensure more effective internal communications globally.
Support development and professional growth within the Internal Communications team.
Continually harness opportunities for ones own development and professional growth paying close attention to industry innovations.
General Tasks
Participate in IJMs community of spiritual formation.
Education & Experience
Bachelors degree in communications journalism marketing or related area required (or equivalent relevant experience) advanced degree in communications or related field preferred.
Minimum 8 years of experience in corporate communications with a minimum of 3 years in internal communications.
Proven ability to set vision and strategy; experience with change management and crisis communications.
Proven ability to project manage complex global communication projects.
Proven ability to learn and work with new technology.
