GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
This position is responsible for supporting the clinical practice in the Blood Donor Center with overall. responsibility for assisting with patientdonor care. This individual must be highly energetic with strong interpersonal skills and flexibility. Responsible for greeting patients and donors in an appropriate manner escorting them into the treatment area and taking their vital signs. Also performs phlebotomy and EKGs as needed. Assists with routine patient care including menus tray delivery and assistance with commodes. Responsible for maintaining par levels of supplies. This includes placing the weekly supply order putting away supplies as they arrive and keeping treatments areas stocked. Conducts daily monitoring of needle boxes and replaces those that are 75 filled. Performs daily and monthly Quality Controls on Donor Center equipment. Cross trained for patient check in and lab order entry. Performs registration into LifeTrak. Each day assembles patient forms for audit and sends to Medical Records. Photographs products and attaches image to visit note. Ships out stem cell products in LifeTrak. Pack and ship Dendreon products. Assembles encounter forms for billing and ensures that none are missed and that all have been completed. Prints visit notes and sends daily to Brigham and Womens Hospital Physician Organization for data entry. Assists in Quality Monitoring data collection and reporting.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Clinical Activities
1. Greets all patients.
2. Performs phlebotomy and EKGs as ordered.
3. Assists with patient care.
4. Distributes and collects menus delivers and removes meal trays
5. Takes vital signs and enters them in the electronic record
6. Performs daily and monthly equipment quality controls.
7. Following strict guidelines packages and ships out Dendreon products
8. Photographs blood products and inserts image into LMR
9. Carries the IDM pager and responds to calls for IDM testing. Maintains the IDM log tracks results keeps coordinators informed and enters IDM data into Lifetrak
B. Clerical Skills
1. Answers multiextension telephone. Directs phone calls using judgment to the nature and urgency of the call. Requests assistance as needed
2. Cross trained to check patients in on arrival.
3. Enters lab orders into lab computer system.
4. Registers donors in LifeTrak..
5. Utilizes the computer and develops increased skills in the BICS LMR CAS Lifetrak and Sunquest/Mysis computer systems
6. Ships out stem cell products via LifeTrak.
7. Assembles checklists and forms for daily chart audit. After audit send forms to Medical Records.
C. Administrative.
1. Responsible for maintaining appropriate supply inventory. With Director sets par levels places orders weekly. Puts away supplies as they arrive and keeps work area stocked
2. Assembles encounter forms and patient notes for physician billing. Verifies that all sheets are present completed and signed. Send batch daily to BWH Physician Organization
3. Assists in Quality Monitoring data collection and reporting
D. Personnel Management
1. Keeps informed of personnel policies and incorporates them in personal practice as needed.
2. Understands performance expectations and strives to meet those standards through periodic formal or informal conferences with his/her direct supervisor.
E. Education
1. Attends and assists with education programs for learning new skills practices and trends to improve functioning of the unit and patient care.
2. Assists in the orientation of new staff and residents.
F. Planning
1. Participates in determining implementing and evaluating goals and objectives for self and unit.
2. Understands overall goals of the Hospital the Blood Donor Center and their impact on the unit staff and patient care.
3. Assists in planning of units organizational activities projects etc.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
1. Some college preferred. Medical Assistant certificate enrollment in an RN or allied health program or 5 years of Medical Assistant experience required.
2. Must be able to read write apply correct spelling and perform simple arithmetic calculations at a level generally acquired through a high school education.
3. Work requires effective utilization of recurring medical terminology lab results and specialized technical skills. This will be at a level generally acquired through a 46 week job specific orientation and training provided by the hospital.
4. Must have good organizational skills and have ability to work
independently and set priorities.
5. Must have ability to adapt to changing environment in a unit with frequent
interruptions; ability to adapt to system changes within the department.
6. Understanding of Departmental and Hospital policies procedures and
operations in order to assume complex scheduling details.
7. Computer competency in the use of multi system programs including
Hospital based systems and outside systems
7. Demonstrate ability to problem solve.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in a Blood Donor Center. Blood products are collected including whole blood platelets and stem cells. Therapeutic procedures on blood (Pheresis) are also performed here. Center is open 6 days a week.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Supply ordering is done to maintain par levels that meet department needs.
