Job Description

About the role:

The Education Officer is a member of the ITC team and reports to the ITC Casework Coordinator.

The Education Officer is integral in helping young people in the Intensive Therapeutic Transitional Care program (ITTC) to access and/or remain in education.

Using a diverse range of strategies and education options that will cater for the varied learning styles of individuals and in conjunction with providing support and guidance throughout each young persons educational journey the Education Officer will assist clients to achieve better quality education outcomes assessing and recording these at regular intervals with the ultimate aim of success in their current educational setting or reintegration into an appropriate educational or vocational setting.


This is a permanent part time position 5 days a fortnight)


Primary objectives:

The role of the Education Officer is to build connections with young people and education providers to enable the successful implementation of appropriate education programs in line with MacKillops values and the ITTC program.

The Education Officer will develop an education plan in alignment with the therapeutic plan for each young person in the program. The plan will be developed in consultation with young people significant others school or other educational setting and be based on an assessment of educational attainment and social and emotional issues. The education plan will aim to increase education participation and reduce absenteeism and education exclusion (suspension expulsion etc).

The Education Officer advocates on behalf of young people to ensure they receive the educational opportunities they deserve.

The Education Officer will develop educational activities for young people in ITTC to undertake whilst they are excluded from mainstream education due to suspension or expulsion.


Key Selection Criteria:

To be successful in this role you will have:

A knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and an awareness of the current issues faced by Aboriginal children young people and their families

Relevant work experience and degree qualification in the field of education;

Demonstrated ability and experience in providing high quality educational experiences to young people with multiple and complex needs including those marginalised from school and society through trauma abuse and neglect;

Experience in developing implementing and reviewing innovative education programs;

Excellent communication skills both verbal and written;

Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively within teams and with other stakeholders;

Ability to work independently to take initiative and a capacity for effective decisionmaking;

Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritise a range of tasks plan workloads and work to deadlines.

You must have a:

  • Valid and current Drivers Licence;
  • Satisfactory Criminal History Check;
  • Valid Employee Working with Children Check;
  • Valid and current NDIS Workers Screening Check (for risk assessed / client facing roles)
