    Job Description:
    The Michigan School for the Deaf is a day and residential facility for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. The Coach work directly with the Activities Director to promote proficiency for students who are members of the Michigan School for the Deaf. Considerable independent judgment is used to make decisions in carrying out assignments that have significant impact on services or programs. Responsibilities: The role of a coach is effectively to direct the school activities as assigned to a particular sport. Their role is to advise and provide guidance and direction on the sport activity. The Activities

    Middle & Elementary Head Coach
    Middle & Elementary Assistant Coach
    Cheerleading & Spirit Squad Head Coach
    Cheerleading & Spirit Squad Assistant Coach
    Academic Bowl Head Coach
    Singing Hands CoDirectors 2 positions
    Boys Track Coach Girls Track Coach
    Chess Coach

    Positions will be filled pending student interest and if there are enough students who sign up for the sport. These are oneyear contracted positions and pay will be determined based upon experience.

    State of Michigan Employees/MSD Contracted Employees:
    Coaching duties should not conflict with work schedule if so annual leave must be requested. If absence from practice you will not be paid for that day.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Preference will be given to applicants who in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications possess one or more of the following:
    Previous experience working as a Coach within a school setting.
    Experience working with deaf/hard of hearing or multidisabled students.
    ASL proficiency at 3 or above as measured by the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI).
    Successful experience working with high school deaf and hard of hearing age students.
    Excellent organizational ability.
    Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with students parents staff and deaf community.
    Ability to communicate effectively both American Sign Language and in English in writing.
    Must have the ability and proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
    Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the program.

    Communication Skills:
    1 Strong ASL/English communication public relation and interpersonal skills.
    2 Ability to write reports and correspondence consistent with the duties of this position.
    3 Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information collaborative efforts and feedback.
    4 Ability to read analyze and interpret information.
    5 Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions inquiries and/or complaints.

    Communicates fluently in American Sign Language and knowledge of Deaf culture. Demonstrate knowledge and competence in the subject area. Must be able to explain concepts to students effectively. Enjoy academic assistance in the subject for which services are being provided. Good interpersonal skills and ease in relating to students from varying educational cultural and diverse backgrounds. Excellent level of responsibility reliability and punctuality. Process good organizational skills complete paperwork and data in a timely manner. Exhibit patience and positive attitudes in establishing and encouraging learning environment.

    Work Hours:
    After school hours during the evening for school activities.

    Working Conditions: Educational environment with extensive interaction with students. May be exposed to infectious diseases. Driving may also be a requirement.

    The Michigan Department of Education/Michigan School for the Deaf will not hire and employ individuals who have been convicted of a listed offense pursuant to the School Safety Legislation Acts (Public Actsand 138 of 2005. The listed offense are defined in the Sex Offenders Registration Act (Section 2 of Public Act 295 of 1994. Fingerprint records are required prior to being hired.
