Job Description

Job Title: Elem. Counselor/Dean of Students Exemption Status/Test: Exempt

Reports to: Principal Date Revised: 02/19/2025

Dept. /School: Assigned Elementary Campus


Primary Purpose:

Plan implement and evaluate a comprehensive social and emotional support program at the assigned campus. Advise students to fully develop each students academic career personal and social abilities and address the needs of special population students.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

A Masters degree in school counseling certification is preferred.

Valid Texas counseling certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of advisory procedures in an educational setting student appraisal and career development

Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.

Ability to present information in oneonone small group and large group situations to students parents and district staff.

Experience:

Three Five years of teaching or relevant social work experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Guidance

  1. Plan and conduct structured group lessons to deliver the districts guidance curriculum effectively and in accordance with students developmental needs. Collaborate with teachers who teach the guidancerelated curriculum.
  2. Guide individual students groups of students and parents to plan monitor and manage the students own educational and career development including creating and reviewing personal graduation plans and providing information about postsecondary opportunities.
  3. Use accepted theories and effective techniques of developmental guidance to advise individual students small groups of students and parents to plan monitor and manage a students own personal and social development. Provide preventive remedial and crisis advising as needed.

Consultation

  1. Coordinate school home and community resources and refer students parents and others to special programs and services as needed.
  2. Work collaboratively to advocate for individual students and specific groups of students.

Assessment

  1. Interpret standardized test results and assessment data to guide students in individual goal setting and planning.
  2. Act as State Testing Coordinator for the campus to coordinate all state assessments.

Program Management and Administration

  1. Plan implement evaluate and promote continuous improvement of a balanced comprehensive developmental guidance and advising program that includes a guidance curriculum responsive services individual planning and system support components.
  2. Advocate for a school environment that acknowledges and respects diversity.
  3. Compile maintain and file all reports records and other documents.
  4. Comply with policies established by federal and state law State Board of Education rules and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  5. Adhere to legal ethical and professional standards for education advisors and social and emotional support including current professional standards of competence and practice.
  6. Perform duties as 504 Coordinator for the campus.
  7. Conduct all necessary atrisk social and emotional support for the campus.
  8. Coordinate the Response to Intervention (RTI) program for the campus.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise assigned paraprofessional and clerical employee(s).

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment.

Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)

Environment: Work inside may work outside

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; may work prolonged or irregular hours
