Description

GENERAL PURPOSE
This position performs a variety of unskilled or semiskilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in the construction operation repair maintenance and replacement of City streets storm drainage facilities water and park systems.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position works under the immediate supervision of the Public Works Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None generally

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs required labor involved with the maintenance and operation of City parks streets and facilities including mowing trimming vegetation control cleaning and general upkeep.
Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew including pavement cutting ditch digging manhole and line cleaning main and pipe repair laying and backfilling and cement work.
As part of the crew assists with cutting fitting laying repairs taps cleaning and flushing of water mains pipes valves and fittings in performing the repair maintenance and installation of services mains fire hydrants and related water systems infrastructure. Assists in repair of broken sections of water mains.
Maintains a variety of records relating to daily inspections and maintenance activity as assigned.
Determines the locations of water and storm drainage from the appropriate sources prior to excavation as assigned.
Assists with response to complaints regarding water leaks pressure loss or no water; evaluating situation; explain of findings to supervisor and with conducting repairs.
As assigned contacts residents and business owners in area where services will be interrupted explains when services will be shut off and how soon service will resume.
Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment with daily equipment and tool inspections and cleaning as necessary.
Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading hauling and unloading of various equipment and materials; operates light and mediumsized construction and powerequipment such as riding mowers and blowers mechanized broom backhoe/loader.
Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
Inspects meters and connections for defects damage and unauthorized connection or use; reports findings to supervisor.
Reads utility meters and assists in the maintenance and replacement of defective meters.
Responds to work orders for utility disconnections reconnections new orders and other Public Works service requests as assigned.
Performs routine maintenance and custodial services for all city buildings.
Performs semiskilled building maintenance such as painting plumbing carpentry and other semiskilled trade work as needed.
Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
Serves on various employee committees as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent one year of experience working in a public or private utility and Flagging and Traffic Control Certificate; or
Any combination of related education and experience or training that in the opinion of the city would provide the level of knowledge and abilities required.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
Some knowledge of equipment facilities materials methods and procedures used in maintenance construction and repair activities.
Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time;
Ability to work safely;
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees other departments and the public;
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Certified as a Water Distribution Specialist I or the ability to obtain.
A Valid Washington State Drivers License and CDL Certification Class B with Air or ability to obtain.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
