The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides nursing care to individuals through the application of basic knowledge of the biological physical behavioral social and nursing sciences under the direction of a registered nurse. The LPN is accountable for his/her own professional development and practice within the scope of care defined by law. The delivery of nursing care within the Kettering Health Network reflects the missions vision values and philosophies of the organization and nursing departments.
The Licensed Practical Nurse reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager.
Minimum Education
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (NLN)
Completion of an approved IV therapy course
Evidence of completion of an OBN course in medication administration
Required Licenses
OhioUnited StatesLicensed Practical Nurse
Licensed in the state of Ohio as a Licensed Practical Nurse
Required Skills
BLS certification
Responsive to coaching to correct risky behaviors and applies learning to next situation
Demonstrates nursing clinical skills necessary to make pertinent and accurate observations of the physical psychological spiritual and educational needs of the patient
Shares collected data with the RN partner in a timely manner.
Provides input to the RN for the development of the patients plan of care
Implements the plan of care as directed by the RN and executes interventions to provide safe quality care.
Contributes to the modification of the care plan based on patient response
Appropriately delegates to unlicensed staff based on the patients care plan and skill level of the personnel.
Timely documents in the electronic medical record or the appropriate venue. Documentation reflects nursing care patient response and associated pertinent information related to the care of the patient.
Demonstrates appropriate clinical judgment and critical thinking skills
Identifies and responds appropriately to emergency situations
Immediately reports changes in the patient condition to the registered nurse
Safely administers medications utilizing the five rights.
Consistently informs patients when new medications are ordered informs patients of the implications and possible side effects of these medications*
Aware of population specific quality indicators; practice reflects actions that support core measures.
Behavioral choices align with safe practice standards
Minimum of 1 year acute care highly desired.
