We are accepting applications to fill one 1 full time Equipment Mechanicvacancy in the Resource Recovery & Waste Management Division (RRWMD) of the Public Works Department in Santa Barbara. Under general supervision maintains and repairs a variety of gasoline and dieselpowered equipment; performs related duties as required. Currently there is one position in Public Works for an appointment due to an employee leave of absence. This recruitment is to fill a position vacated because of a leave of absence (CSR 1414 and the duration of the appointment shall be subject to the return of the individual who is on a leave. A person who is appointed to a position under CSR 1414 may be able to transition into a regular position in the classification without reapplication or retesting depending on the performance of the appointee and the needs of the department.

The established employment list for this recruitment may also be used for future FullTime PartTime ExtraHelp and CSR 1414* vacancies in the Public Works DepartmentandGeneral Services Department. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Equipment Mechanic I/II is a flexibly staffed series. Equipment Mechanic I is the entrylevel class in which incumbents perform the less complex repair work and assist an Equipment Mechanic II in performing the more complex repairs. The Equipment Mechanic II is characterized by responsibility for independently performing more complex repairs and for acting in a lead capacity over an Equipment Mechanic I. This series is distinguished from the Automotive Mechanic class series by responsibility for maintaining and repairing heavy equipment. Heavy equipment is defined as vehicles larger than one ton including: fire engines buses and construction equipment.

Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C Drivers License upon appointment. Possession of a valid California Class A Drivers License within one year of appointment.

Note A California Class A Commercial Drivers license must be kept valid and maintained as a condition of continued employment.

Once an incumbent has obtained the Class A license they will be subject to mandatory testing for prior to being assigned work requiring such a license; once assigned incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for and/or alcohol on a random reasonable suspicion postaccident returntoduty and followup basis.

Knowledge of: principles and practices of repair and preventive maintenance of motor vehicles; tools and equipment used in making mechanical repairs.

Ability to: learn electronic diagnostic methods and equipment; learn to use an automated recordkeeping system; follow instructions; follow safe work practices; learn gas and arc welding; keep simple records; use a computer keyboard.

Supplemental Information

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbents in this class perform most work outdoors may be required to work in awkward positions and may be exposed to hazards such as diesel exhaust.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Applicants must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the Supplemental Questionnaire to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s) rank on the employment list and exact duration of the employment list.

Conditional Job Offer: Once a conditional offer of employment has been made candidate will be required to successfully complete a background check which includes a conviction history check and satisfactory reference checks. Appointee will be subject to a postoffer medical evaluation or examination.
