The Department of Pediatrics at CHEO University of Ottawa is recruiting clinical associates within the Division of Critical Care to provide coverage in the IMCU from February 1 2025 to March 31 2025. Further there is potential to transition into a permanent role yearround providing coverage as in the IMCU and ICU based on season and acuity.
The ideal candidate for this position will hold a medical degree from an approved LCME school and be eligible for licensure to practice in Ontario. While English is the language of the health record functionality in French is an asset.
The Department of Pediatrics is affiliated with CHEO the CHEO Research Institute and the University of Ottawa. Together we provide outstanding patient care leading research and quality pediatric medical education. The Department of Pediatrics provides health care to newborns children and youth of the Ottawa area as well as those from Eastern Ontario Western Quebec Nunavut and parts of Northern Ontario (population of approximately 1.8 million). The Department of Pediatrics has 18 distinct divisions which includes Critical Care.
TheIntermediate Care Unit (IMCU) is a new level 2 unit within CHEO. Currently the IMCU service covers 6 patients with plans to gradually expand to a maximum of 12. The CHEO IMCU is a rapidly developing and new clinical service that cares for a variety of patients whose needs include noninvasive ventilation chronic ventilation with a tracheostomy and ventilator high monitoring requirements or any advanced needs that may benefit from an enhanced multidisciplinary team and intensivists as the most responsible physician (MRP). The primary responsibility of the IMCU Clinical Associate (CA) will be to provide nighttime clinical coverage for the IMCU service. Should the role transition into a permanent yearround position this will expand to include daytime coverage and the potential for some work cross covering as the junior in house staff in the PICU (supported by the staff MRP and inhouse senior). In addition to caring for the IMCU patients you will provide consultation advice and support to the Emergency Department and inpatient wards.
Clinical responsibilities for the CA in IMCU include:
Inhouse overnight coverage of the IMCU with backup support from the MRP
Seeing IMCU consults in ER
Seeing IMCU consults in PICU
Seeing and accepting patients seen by the SPOT team that are identified as potentially appropriate for IMCU admission
Updating and interacting with patient families
Helping to manage bed flow in and out of the IMCU
The ideal candidate for this position will hold a medical degree from an approved LCME school and be eligible for licensure to practice in Ontario. Experience in PICU and/or further subspecialty training or certification in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine NOT required. We would encourage moonlighting residents family physicians pediatricians or other interesting parties in applying for the position.
Renumeration: Payment is based on an hourly rate of $125/hour (depending on experience). The initial shifts for in February and March will primarily be night shifts from 4pm to 8am with the possibility of some daytime coverages as well (primarily weekends). In the future permanent role this would become more varied.
The establishment of the positions in February and March 2025 will be contingent on coverage being able to be obtained by interested parties for the entirety of February and March. In the permanent roles we expect approximately 50100 CA shifts to be available between October March with a highly negotiable number of shifts and hours the remainder of the year.
