The Role
The Commercial Manager will work in the Enterprise function we are the front door to industry and small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs). We focus on engaging with industry and SMEs to create partnerships and collaborations with our health system partners (trusts ICBs PCNs etc. to support the adoption and spread of proven innovations into the NHS.
The health system is facing unprecedented challenges and we want to be at the forefront helping our health system partners through innovation. This means that we work in a fastpaced rapidlychanging environment with a high degree of uncertainty. This role is suited to someone that excels at navigating through uncertainty and ambiguity and is comfortable pivoting their work to meet changing needs.
Were able to deliver this work through our commission from the Office for Life Sciences (OLS). Therefore a key part of this role is the accountability for the OLS commission.
Key responsibilities
- Work closely with the Senior Commercial Manager and the wider Enterprise team to manage our industry/ SME pipeline to deliver our Office for Life Sciences (OLS) commission:
- Onetoone meetings with innovators to provide advice and guidance on accessing the NHS market
- Market scanning to identify innovations and opportunities for the Enterprise function and our health system partners
- Provide expert knowledge to innovators in developing a strong value proposition for our health system partners
- Gather early market intelligence and facilitate appropriate signposting and brokering relationships between health technology companies and local subject matter experts to support early innovation development
- Maintain the database (and organisation) of commercial contracts with partners supporting the Senior Commercial Manager and Commercial Director with drafting and negotiating agreements as required
- Support the delivery of innovation focussed events and activities to enable appropriate collaborations to emerge between innovators and industry (e.g. leading on the planning of Specialist Briefings)
- Work with the Enterprise Manager on the reporting and assurance functions
- Identify and evaluate bid and grant opportunities (for innovators and our health system partners) to support innovation initiatives contributing to the development and conceptualisation of project proposals. Where appropriate working closely with the Senior Commercial Manager to:
- Provide highlevel advice and guidance
- Hold grant writing clinics
- Hold the pen on grants for highvalue opportunities that align with our priorities
- Identify routes for private external funding e.g. venture capital accelerators joint ventures
- Proactively drive (and where appropriate lead) collaborations and projects with health system partners industry and other stakeholders to support highimpact innovation development from research to implementation with support from the wider Enterprise and UCLP team
- Leverage your commercial acumen to act as subject matter expert on specific projects and pilots
- Drive progress and assurance by deploying project management tools and methodologies
- Collaborate with our NHS partners industry and other stakeholders to capture and share learnings to support innovation development from research to implementation in the form of reports webinars and showcase events.
You
- Experience working in healthcare life sciences/ health technology industry (large enterprise and/or SME) and/or an organisation supporting development and implementation of innovation (e.g. consultancy)
Proven understanding of the innovation pathway from ideation through to delivery ideally with knowledge of market access and experience in supporting innovations along the pathway - Experience driving partnerships internally and across multiple organisations ideally including working with industry and life sciences / health technology companies
- Experience communicating with a range of internal and external stakeholders across organisations particularly between industry partners and the NHS or academic institutions
- Ability to develop highquality materials (e.g. PowerPoint presentations) to communicate complex ideas to senior stakeholders
- A proactive and strategic mindset to understand the needs of multiple stakeholders and drive the development and implementation of project
- Practical experience of managing multiple concurrent projects in a fastpaced and changing environment that will require pivoting your work and attention
- Experience of using project management tools to monitor delivery and drive progress
- Understanding of relevant legal compliance governance and regulatory aspects of MedTech and health innovation
- Experience in influencing and motivation skills with the ability to rapidly build credibility with internal and external stakeholders earning their trust and confidence
- Experience of working independently prioritising organising and planning own workload and delivering results consistently with attention to accuracy and detail
- An enthusiasm for and knowledge of health innovation
- An understanding of the importance of patient carer and community involvement in innovation development and adoption
- A strong commitment to equity and diverse and inclusive teams and principles
- Proficient in use of MS PowerPoint Office and Excel with an ability to effectively use a customer relationship management system.

Job details
The Commercial Manager will report to the Senior Commercial Manager. The role is a fulltime permanent position with a 37.5 hour work week. The remuneration for this post is competitive depending on skills and experience with a salary range of 46350 to 61800 per annum.
