Job Description

The Newcomb Art Department and Program in Digital Media Practices at Tulane University invites applications for a fulltime tenuretrack assistant professor in studio art with a focus on digital art and expanded media. Appointment to begin July 2025.

The Newcomb Art department is one of the oldest art departments in the South founded as part of the first degreegranting college for women in the U.S. and fully incorporated into Tulane University in 1987. The department is at an exciting moment in its trajectory. We are expanding our commitment to reflect the transnational networks of the contemporary art world and building on our connections to our culturally diverse and profoundly creative home city of New Orleans itself a global cultural capital. Digital Media Practices provides students opportunities to develop and refine digital media skills omnipresent across exhibition spaces and streaming platforms. Students pursue fundamentals through coursework in content creation storytelling and media manipulation in filmmaking screenwriting audio production Interactive media game design podcasting and interdisciplinary media. The programs workshopstyle classes allow experienced and supportive faculty to define student goals and actively collaborate critical soft skills in the media production industry.

We are searching for a collaborative faculty member in studio art with experience in digital and new media techniques within the interdisciplinary realm of contemporary art. The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to teaching and will employ an integrated approach to cultivating artistic practice across foundational emerging and experimental modalities in the classroom. This position necessitates a proactive approach to updating curriculum and pedagogy in response to dynamically shifting digital and technological tools. We are particularly interested in artisteducators whose research and practice actively engage with these evolving tools and contribute to critical discourse in the field. Applicants should also demonstrate an active professional practice at the national or international level with a track record of growing recognition in the field.

Fulltime faculty teach undergraduate and graduatelevel studio classes seminars and consistently serve on BFA and MFA committees within the interdisciplinary art environment of these programs. Tenuretrack faculty members are expected to maintain active professional careers and participate in ongoing curricular development departmental administration and school governance. The course load for this position is 2:2. This position is structured as a 75/25 joint appointment between the Department and the Program with at least one course per year originating in the Program.

Salary and benefits are competitive with peer institutions and commensurate with quality of practice scholarship academic research extent of teaching experience and current professional standing.

Responsibilities:

Conduct scholarly work (research and/or creative activity) with an active exhibition record and recognition in the field.

Teach two courses per semester in both fall and spring semesters including introductorylevel courses.

At least one of the four courses taught per year will originate from our Digital Media Practices program (courses may be colisted across the two programs)

Areas of artistic expertise in research and teaching include but are not limited to:

Emerging and new media art

Timebased media including sound art

Experimental video

Digital fabrication

Computational art and creative coding

Internet art

Augmented reality virtual reality and/or artificial intelligence

Interactive experiences

Electronic objects and interfaces

Digital drawing/painting

Art games

Bio/Eco art

Support our students in developing creative works as part of a socially and culturally engaged research university.

Coordinate teaching with graduate teaching assistants and faculty in digital art.

Supervise/conduct individual studies with graduate students in digital art.

Serve on MFA and BFA review committees which meet twice a semester.

Contribute to curricular revision and development to build a progressive innovative and destination arts program.

Contribute to the safe and effective supervision of the digital art classroom in concert with other colleagues and staff as available. This may include repair / replacement of equipment supervision of student workers managing material inventories etc.

Participate in service activities within the Newcomb Art Department the Program in Digital Media Practices the School of Liberal Arts and the University.

The Newcomb Art Department at Tulane University is devoted to the study and production of visual art within the context of Tulane Universitys strong tradition in the liberal arts. The Art Department fosters a collaborative and rigorous environment that promotes creative and critical inquiry exploration and innovation in studio arts practice. The Department emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to contemporary artmaking and supports myriad forms of expression with concentrations in Sculpture Glass Ceramics Photography Printmaking Digital Arts and Painting & Drawing.

Located in New Orleans a vibrant and culturally rich city in the Gulf South the Newcomb Art Department draws from a diverse and exciting range of artistic and cultural production. Local resources for artists include Prospect New Orleans (an international art triennial) the Joan Mitchell Center the Contemporary Arts Center of New Orleans the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. New Orleans is also home to vibrant artistrun gallery spaces in the St. Claude Avenue Arts District as well as a cluster of commercial galleries on Julia Street and in Uptown New Orleans.



Requirements:

MFA PhD or equivalent terminal degree

Teaching experience beyond graduate assistant teaching preferably two years or more

Ongoing studio practice and peerreviewed achievements/exhibition record.

Knowledge in multiple types of artistic production in Studio Art or inter / transdisciplinary art practices in both contemporary and historical contexts.

Ability to teach a range of creative skills in the digital realm adding new skills as they arise.

Commitment to emerging technologies and current discourse in critical theory.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively.

Service and community engagement are highly desirable.

Leadership experience or potential is highly desirable.

Evidence of equitable considerations awareness and practice with regard to curricular development inclusive practices in educating diverse student bodies or working with a diverse faculty and staff along with evidence of working collectively to cultivate a culture that supports success and enables all members of a college community to thrive.
