Job Description

This is theEnglish as a Second Language (ESL)teacher posting for the 2025/26 school year. Site(s) grade level and FTE are to be determined. Applications may be reviewed as they are received.

The starting salary is based upon the previous number of years of teaching experience.Any parttime parttime position (less than 1.0 FTE) will be proratedto the appropriate FTE.

General Summary:

The English as a Second Language teacher has primary responsibilities of providing English language instruction which enables English Language Learners (ELLs) to acquire English language skills needed to be independent learners in the mainstream and helping learn academic subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature able and responsible men and women. The ESL teacher reports to the building principal.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teaches District approved curriculum. Provides ELLs instruction for English language development: basic survival skills basic English (listening speaking reading writing grammar and vocabulary) academic content area skills and language.
  2. Plans a program that meets the individual needs interests and abilities of the students.
  3. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  4. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  5. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  6. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all lessons units projects and the like to communicate these objectives to the students.
  7. Diagnoses the learning styles of the students.
  8. Provides mainstream staff (administrative instructional and support personnel) with data related to the learning style of students and with vital cultural information related to the background of ELLs and their families.
  9. Communicates and works effectively with the ESL Coordinator ESL Coach and other staff.
  10. Evaluates pupils academic and social growth keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
  11. Is available to students and parents for educationrelated purposes.
  12. Meets regularly with principals mainstream teachers counselors and other support personnel connected with the education of ELLs in their classes to assess collaboratively their academic/curriculum needs.
  13. Helps the ESL office and the school buildings identify assess place teach and counsel each ELL enrolled in their building.
  14. Helps the ESL office provide staff development training for school personnel who have had little or no experience working with students learning ESL.
  15. Assists new nonEnglish speaking students and their families and their school buildings as new students enroll.
  16. Attends ESL Individual Evaluation Plan (IEP) and Team Addressing Student Concerns (TASC) meetings as requested by the ESL Coordinator with prior approval.
  17. Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  1. Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with an ESL (NS) or bilingual endorsement.
  2. Bachelors Degree and a minimum of two years successful ESL teaching experience.
  3. Ability to present information effectively and to respond to questions from individuals or groups.
  4. Effective oral and written communication skills.
